Okinawa Cherry Blossom Festivals 2027: Japan's Earliest Sakura

Okinawa's cherry trees bloom in late January and February, weeks before Tokyo. The 2027 dates for the Nago and Nakijin festivals, what we know about Motobu Yaedake and Yaese, and how the island's deep-pink sakura differs from the ones you've seen in photos.

It's the last weekend of January, and you're standing on Nago Jujiro, the main street of Nago, the main town of northern Okinawa. The road is closed to cars, and school brass bands are marching past. On the hill above, the slope of Nago Castle Park is lined with kanhizakura, a deep-pink cherry that opens weeks before the trees in Tokyo. A short drive away, more cherry trees line the path up through the gates of Nakijin Castle Ruins, a World Heritage site.

This guide covers the four cherry festivals on Okinawa's main island that we track: what is already confirmed for 2027, what isn't, and how to fit them into a winter trip.

Best for
  • Travelers in Okinawa in late January or early February
  • Anyone who wants cherry blossoms before mainland Japan's spring
  • Road-trippers heading to northern Okinawa and the Churaumi Aquarium
  • Mid-JanWhen Okinawa's cherries usually begin to bloom, the earliest start in Japan

Three of the four festivals are in neighboring towns in the north of the main island, and one is in the south:

  • Nago (north): we found no festival entry fee on its page.
  • Motobu (north): we found no festival entry fee on its page.
  • Nakijin (north): Nakijin Castle Ruins charges its normal admission.
  • Yaese (south, closer to Naha): we found no festival entry fee on its page.

These aren't the cherry blossoms you've seen in photos

On Japan's main islands, the cherry that JMA tracks is mainly one variety, somei-yoshino, the pale tree in most Tokyo and Kyoto photos. According to JMA, that variety doesn't grow in Okinawa and Amami, so the agency watches a different tree here, which it calls hikanzakura.

Locally, the same tree is usually called kanhizakura. The Ginowan City Museum notes that both names are used, with kanhizakura the more common one. A few things the museum points out:

  • Few other cherries: the museum explains that the mainland varieties don't flower well because Okinawa is too warm, so nearly all the cherries you'll see on the island are kanhizakura.
  • Wild trees are rare: the museum says the only wild stand is in the upper Arakawa River area on Ishigaki Island. The famous spots on the main island, such as Mount Nago and Mount Yaedake, are planted.

The bloom moves with the weather from year to year. Festival dates can change, too: in 2026, the Motobu festival was extended to February 8.

Nago Cherry Blossom Festival (confirmed: January 30–31, 2027)

The 64th Nago Cherry Blossom Festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday, January 30–31, 2027, according to the Nago City Tourism Association, which runs the festival office. Nago is the main town of northern Okinawa. This is the easiest festival to enjoy without speaking Japanese, because most of it happens on the street.

Where it happens: - Nago Castle Park (Nago Joseki Park): the hillside of cherry trees above town. The association says its kanhizakura are usually at their best from late January to mid-February. - Festival plaza at Sakura Park: a special stage for the opening ceremony and other shows. - Nago Jujiro main street: parades, plus a pedestrian zone where the road is closed to cars. - Nago fishing port: the Hana no Sato Garden Festa (January 29–31, 2027) and the festival's temporary parking.

Nago festival schedule
  1. Both daysPedestrian zone, 11:00–20:30, except while parades are passing.
  2. Jan 30, 1:00 p.m.School brass bands parade.
  3. Jan 30, 2:00 p.m.The Nago women's association dance parade.
  4. Jan 30, 3:00 p.m.The "Odori Kwadisa" dance parade.
  5. Day twoThe page lists a costume parade with eisa at 1:00 p.m. and a taiko drum show at 7:00 p.m., but it still labels those items with a 2026-style date ("February 1, Sunday"). In 2027, Sunday is January 31. Treat the day-two times as unconfirmed until the page is updated.
  6. StageThe stage program is listed as not decided yet.

Several parts of the official page still carry last year's wording, so check it again in January before you go.

Nakijin Gusuku Cherry Blossom Festival (confirmed: January 30 – February 7, 2027)

The Nakijin Village Tourism Association announced the 20th Nakijin Gusuku Cherry Blossom Festival for January 30 – February 7, 2027 at Nakijin Castle Ruins, a World Heritage site. Cherry trees line the path up through the gates. The association says other details, such as hours and events, will be added later.

Getting in: Normal admission to the castle ruins is ¥1,000 for adults (about $6), ¥500 for junior high and high school students (about $3), and free for elementary-age children and younger. Normal hours (January–April and September–December) are 8:00–18:00 with last entry at 17:30; summer hours (May–August) are longer. Festival-period hours have not been announced for 2027 (as of October 2026, official site).

Motobu Yaedake Cherry Blossom Festival (2027 dates not announced)

Mount Yaedake in Motobu is the classic cherry drive in Okinawa. The Motobu Town Tourism Association describes more than 7,000 kanhizakura along the road of roughly 4 km (2.5 miles) that climbs toward the summit, and it bills the festival as Japan's earliest cherry blossom festival. The main venue is Yaedake Sakura no Mori Park, about halfway up, with toilets, a play area and parking for about 500 cars.

2026 for reference: the 48th festival ran January 17 – February 8, 2026 (the association extended the run to February 8). The association also said a free shuttle bus ran during the festival.

2027: The 49th festival has not been announced yet (as of October 11, 2026). The tourism association's event list does not show it, and we have not found the dates on any official page.

Yaese Cherry Blossom Festival (2027 dates not announced)

If you're staying in Naha and don't want to drive north, Yaese Park in Yaese Town, in the south of the main island, is the closest of the four. Its festival is known for lanterns along the park steps at night.

2026 for reference: the 19th festival ran January 29 – February 8, 2026, open 8:30–21:00 with lights from 18:00–21:00. There was a stage show on one Sunday, food stalls, a free-to-use foot bath (bring a towel) and a small petting zoo on some days (adults ¥1,000, about $6; children 4 and up ¥500, about $3). On weekends, visitors parked at a temporary lot in neighboring Itoman and took a shuttle bus. The page also listed Okinawa buses 34, 334 and 50 from Naha Bus Terminal to stops near the park (as of October 2026, official site).

2027: The 20th festival has not been announced yet (as of October 11, 2026). The Yaese Town Tourism Association's news page didn't list it when we checked.

Seeing several in one trip

  • Nago, Motobu and Nakijin sit next to each other on the Motobu Peninsula side of northern Okinawa. Motobu is also home to the Churaumi Aquarium, so the two fit in the same trip.
  • In 2027, January 30–31 is the safest weekend to aim for. Both confirmed festivals are on. Whether Yaedake's festival overlaps is not known yet.
  • Nakijin hours: festival hours, including any evening opening, have not been announced for 2027.

When to go: weather in January and February

January and February are Okinawa's coolest months, but they're mild by U.S. standards. In Naha, January averages 17.3°C (63°F), with highs around 19.8°C (68°F) and lows around 14.9°C (59°F). February is about the same: average 17.5°C (64°F), highs 20.2°C (68°F), lows 15.1°C (59°F). Rainfall averages about 102 mm (4 in) in January and 115 mm (4.5 in) in February. No typhoons approach Okinawa in these months on average (Japan Meteorological Agency normals, 1991–2020). Plan on sightseeing rather than swimming.

A note for travelers from California: United's San Francisco–Naha nonstop is scheduled to start on March 27, 2027, after the 2027 cherry season ends. If you're going in January or February 2027, you'll need to connect.
