San Francisco to Okinawa Nonstop: The United SFO–Naha Flight Guide

On a Saturday morning at SFO, you board a United Boeing 777-200ER bound for Naha. Roughly 13 hours later, and one calendar day ahead thanks to the International Date Line, you step off in Okinawa on Sunday afternoon, with daylight left to reach your hotel and no change of planes in Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul or Taipei.

United Airlines plans to fly nonstop between San Francisco (SFO) and Naha (OKA) from March 27, 2027. Stars and Stripes reported that it will be the first nonstop flight between Okinawa and the continental US since the islands returned to Japan in 1972. This guide covers the schedule, who the flight suits, and your first hours and days after landing.

Status as of October 14, 2026: United announced the route on August 25, 2026, and said tickets were on sale that day on united.com and in the United app. United says all new routes still need government approval, and schedules can change. Japanese media report it launches with the summer 2027 schedule; United hasn't said whether it runs all year. Check united.com before you book.

For the outbound flight, the number and times are what United's own flight search showed when we looked up the March 27 and March 29, 2027 departures, with 13 hours 15 minutes in the air (as of October 2026, united.com flight search). The days of the week are as reported by Aviation Wire, a Japanese aviation news site, in August 2026. We haven't checked the return flight on United yet, so treat its number and times as reported, not confirmed. Times can still change before launch, so check your booking for your date.

The aircraft is a Boeing 777-200ER with United Polaris business class on board.

Because you cross the International Date Line, you lose a day going out and "gain" it back on the way home. Here is how one round trip looks on the clock:

Who this flight is for

Bay Area and West Coast travelers. No more overnight connection in Tokyo. You can be at the beach the same evening you land.
US service members and their families. Okinawa hosts a large share of the US forces in Japan. A nonstop flight can cut out a connection on many trips between Okinawa and the US, including family visits.
Anyone connecting through SFO. United's hub means one stop from most US cities.

Arriving at Naha Airport: the first hour

An afternoon landing gives you daylight to get settled. How you reach your hotel depends on where you stay:

Staying in Naha: the Yui Rail monorail runs straight from the airport into the city.
Heading north: Okinawa Bus still has airport limousine departures to some Onna and Yomitan hotels in the late afternoon (book ahead, at least an hour after landing). Its Chatan line makes its last airport run in the early afternoon, before this flight is due in, so for Chatan take route bus 120 or a taxi. For Motobu, rent a car; the limousine there is suspended (all as of October 2026, Okinawa Bus official timetable from August 21, 2026). See our airport guide.

Before you fly

Entry: the US is on Japan's visa-exemption list for short stays such as tourism, and the period of stay given on arrival is 90 days, according to Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Fill in the immigration and customs forms ahead of time on Visit Japan Web, the government's official site. It gives you QR codes that make arrival faster.
Driving: a US license alone isn't valid in Japan. The U.S. Embassy in Japan says you need an International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention), issued in the US by AAA or AATA, and you must get it before you leave. Japan drives on the left.
Cash and cards: JNTO, Japan's national tourism office, says cards work in most stores and restaurants, but small shops may take cash only. Seven Bank ATMs, found in 7-Eleven stores and at Naha Airport, accept many cards issued abroad (Visa, Mastercard and others), though Seven Bank notes that some cards may not work.
Medicines: up to a one-month supply of most prescription medicines for your own use needs no paperwork. Medicines containing amphetamine, such as Adderall, can't be brought into Japan even with a prescription. The date line: you land in Naha the calendar day after you leave SFO, and get the day back on the way home.

When to go

The flight starts at the end of March. In Okinawa that's early spring, with warm days and few typhoons. From July to September highs average around 31°C (88°F). Late summer is typhoon season, and storms can cancel flights and ferries for a day or two. Pick your dates by what you want to do:

Typhoons: about 7.7 a year come near Okinawa, most in August and September. Flights and ferries can stop for a day or two — keep your plans flexible in late summer.
Rainy season: around May 10 to around June 21 in a typical year.
Swimming: Swim at managed beaches during their swimming season, when lifeguards keep watch and nets are set against box jellyfish. Many beaches have neither. Check the beach's official page before you go.
Box jellyfish: advisory June 1 – September 30 (2026); most stings in July and August; swim inside the nets and cover your legs.
Basketball: B.LEAGUE season runs fall to spring, with playoffs in May.
The nonstop: United's SFO–Naha nonstop starts March 27, 2027, three times a week. Some reports say it is seasonal; that is not confirmed yet.

What to do in your first three days

With a Sunday-afternoon arrival, a simple plan looks like this:

Day 1 (evening): dinner in Naha. Kokusai-dori is about 13 minutes by monorail to Prefectural Office Station (Kenchomae), at one end of the street.
Day 2: drive or bus up the west coast to American Village in Chatan for the sunset.
Day 3: the Churaumi Aquarium and the Motobu Peninsula. Plan a full day.

In season (October to May), check whether the Ryukyu Golden Kings have a home game. Okinawa's pro basketball team plays at an arena set up for about 8,500 spectators on game nights (as of October 2026, official site), and a game makes a lively night out. → Catch a Ryukyu Golden Kings game

The outbound flight number and times (UA833: 10:35 am from SFO, 3:50 pm into Naha the next day, 13 hours 15 minutes) come from United's flight search, which we checked on October 17, 2026 for the March 27 and March 29, 2027 departures. The days of the week come from Aviation Wire's August 25, 2026 report.
The return flight (UA834) is as reported in Japanese media; we haven't checked it on United yet. United also hasn't said which season the route runs. Schedules may change, and we'll update this page when they do.
