Step out of a Tida villa at HOSHINOYA Okinawa in Yomitan and your terrace runs straight onto the beach, and the villa has a pool of its own. This is the west coast of Okinawa's main island, which faces the East China Sea, so the sun goes down over open water. On the same island, every one of Halekulani Okinawa's 360 rooms faces the ocean, and far to the south, the islands of Miyako and Ishigaki have resorts of their own.

This guide sorts Okinawa's beach resorts into four tiers, from villas with their own pools down to good-value hotels that still have a pool and a beach nearby, with official sample rates in yen and dollars and the best time to go.

Best for
  • Couples planning a honeymoon or a splurge
  • Families who want a kids' club and a beach
  • Travelers who can go on a winter weekday to save
  • Anyone choosing between the main island, Miyako and Ishigaki
  • about ¥311,000Highest rate we found: a July Saturday at Rosewood Miyakojima (about $1,970)
  • ¥18,620Lowest rate we found: a January weekday at Vessel Hotel Campana Okinawa (about $120)
  • 2–3xWhat a peak summer Saturday cost compared with a January weekday at most of these hotels
  • ¥157.81Yen per US dollar on October 2, 2026

Sample rates for 2 adults, 1 room, 1 night, searched for Wednesday, January 27, 2027 and Saturday, July 17, 2027. Each is the lowest public rate the hotel's own booking site showed, not a members-only rate. "incl." means tax and service are included; "+tax" means taxes are added at booking. How to read these prices. Use them to judge the price band, not as a quote. Early-booking and prepaid rates usually can't be refunded, and rates change daily. The room and rate column tells you what to look for on the hotel's own site. Notes by hotel:

  • Rosewood: the booking calendar showed rounded nightly prices; we couldn't open the room list to see the room or whether tax was included.
  • Hilton: the prices include a 13% service charge but not tax. Hilton also shows lower members' prices.
  • Marriott hotels (Ritz-Carlton, IRAPH SUI, Renaissance, Sheraton, Courtyard): the prices are before tax. Marriott also shows lower members' prices.
  • HOSHINOYA: the site shows prices per person in dollars for two-night stays, so we couldn't line them up with the others.
  • BEB5: the site lists a per-person price; the table shows the total for two. It doesn't say whether tax is included. In July, its barrier-free room was cheaper on a 30-day advance plan (¥39,724 with breakfast).
  • One Suite THE GRAND: the totals include consumption tax. The site shows a lower members' price, ¥1,000 less.
  • The Orion: the totals include tax and the service charge; this rate is paid by card when you book (all as of October 2026, official site).

These hotels appear in the tiers below, but we didn't check comparable prices for them:

  • ANA InterContinental Ishigaki
  • Club Med Kabira
  • Feliz Villa Suite: its calendar shows a "from" price without the room or the number of guests

How we rank

We don't use star scores or reviews from booking and review sites, which change every day and belong to the sites that publish them, and we didn't accept free stays or discounts from any hotel for this guide. Instead, each hotel goes into the highest tier whose test it passes, based on three things we can check:

  1. Awards from two hotel guides. The MICHELIN Guide gives its top hotels one or more "Keys" and lists others as "Selected" with no Key. Forbes Travel Guide rates hotels from Recommended up to Five-Star. These are the guides' own judgments, not ours, and we use them only as a reference point. Both guides review their awards every year, so check the guide's page before you book.
  2. The brand's own class. Ritz-Carlton and Rosewood, for example, are luxury brands, while Courtyard is a mid-priced Marriott brand.
  3. The official price from the two searches above.

An award counts for more than the brand, and the brand counts for more than the price. Where a tier rests on the price alone and we couldn't read a price, we mark it "provisional."

Tier Our test (price bands use sample rates as of October 2026, official site)
1. Ultra-luxury Two or more MICHELIN Keys, or a Forbes Five-Star rating
2. Luxury One MICHELIN Key, Forbes Four-Star, a luxury brand, or an all-villa resort at ¥150,000+ on a summer Saturday
3. Upscale resort MICHELIN "Selected," Forbes Recommended, a major upscale brand (Hilton, InterContinental, Sheraton and similar), or a full-service beach resort at about ¥50,000–110,000 on a summer Saturday
4. Good value A mid-priced brand, or a weekday January price under about ¥25,000, while still offering a pool and a beach or resort setting

Room counts, pools, kids' clubs and shuttles in the tiers below are as each hotel's official site described them (as of October 2026, official site). Travel times from Naha Airport come from each hotel's access page for these hotels (all as of October 2026, official site):

  • Halekulani Okinawa
  • HOSHINOYA Okinawa
  • The Uza Terrace
  • One Suite THE GRAND
  • The Orion
  • BEB5
  • Feliz Villa Suite

The other travel times are unconfirmed, so check with the hotel.

Tier 1: Ultra-luxury

Halekulani Okinawa (Onna, main island)

As of October 2026, it's the only hotel in Okinawa with both two MICHELIN Keys and a Forbes Five-Star rating, according to the two guides. All 360 rooms face the ocean, above a white-sand beach on a protected stretch of coast. There are five pools, including the signature Orchid Pool. At the top end, five villas each have a private heated pool and their own hot-spring bath.

Open in Google Maps

Rosewood Miyakojima (Miyako Island)

Opened in March 2025 on Oura Bay, with two MICHELIN Keys. It has 55 villas and houses, many with private pools, plus an infinity pool by the beach and the Asaya spa. Kids are welcome: Rose Buds is for ages 0–3 and the Rosewood Explorers club is for ages 4–12. It had the highest prices we found anywhere in Okinawa.

Open in Google Maps

JUSANDI (Ishigaki Island)

A tiny hideaway of just five suite villas, each with its own pool, also holding two MICHELIN Keys. A small beach is about a 3-minute walk away, and since 2023 it has accepted children of all ages. It's a niche pick for couples who want total privacy. Its site is in Japanese, and we didn't check prices.

Open in Google Maps

Tier 2: Luxury

The Uza Terrace Beach Club Villas (Yomitan)

An all-villa resort and a member of Relais & Châteaux, with MICHELIN "Selected" status. Room types run from one- and two-bedroom Pool Villas to a four-bedroom Presidential Villa. Its prices alone put it in this tier: the cheapest summer Saturday option was over ¥200,000 (as of October 2026, official site). It's small and quiet, a good fit for a honeymoon or a group of friends.

Open in Google Maps

IRAPH SUI, a Luxury Collection Hotel (Irabu Island, Miyako)

Part of Marriott's Luxury Collection, one of its luxury brands, with MICHELIN "Selected" status. It sits by the sea on Irabu Island, in the Miyako group. There's an outdoor pool, the SUI Spa and a French restaurant, and some rooms take dogs. A free airport shuttle and a free shuttle to a nearby beach run by reservation.

Open in Google Maps

The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa (Nago)

One MICHELIN Key and a Forbes Four-Star rating. It isn't a beachfront hotel: it sits on a golf course with the ocean on three sides, a short way from Kise Beach. With only 97 rooms, it's one of the most private stays on the island. There are indoor and outdoor pools and a spa in its own building.

Open in Google Maps

HOSHINOYA Okinawa (Yomitan)

Japan's Hoshino Resorts runs this oceanfront resort of 100 rooms, with one MICHELIN Key. The Tida villas have private pools, and their terraces lead straight onto the beach. Every room type faces the sea.

Open in Google Maps

HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island (Taketomi Island)

Taketomi is a small island in the Yaeyama group, far south of the main island. HOSHINOYA has 48 villas in a traditional village style, with stone walls and white coral-sand yards, and one MICHELIN Key. There's a 46 m pool open around the clock, and several beaches nearby, including Kondoi Beach.

Open in Google Maps

Hyakuna Garan (Nanjo, southern main island)

A small retreat in the south of the main island with one MICHELIN Key (announced on its own site in September 2026). Forbes Travel Guide also lists it as Recommended. It has open-air baths. Guests must be 10 or older, and younger children can't share a bed with adults (as of October 2026, official site).

Open in Google Maps

THE HIRAMATSU Ginoza (Ginoza, east coast)

THE HIRAMATSU is a hotel brand built around food, and dining is the focus here, with a French fine-dining restaurant and a spa. It has just 19 rooms, all different, and one MICHELIN Key (September 2026). It's on the quieter east coast, which faces the sunrise rather than the sunset.

Open in Google Maps

One Suite THE GRAND (Kouri Island, north)

Kouri Island sits off the north of the main island, and you drive onto it across a long bridge. This small hotel stands on the island's high ground, not on a beach, and its site doesn't mention a beach of its own; its room pages list 26 rooms in all. It holds one MICHELIN Key. The higher room types come with a jacuzzi on the terrace or in a private garden, and the four Pool Villa Suites, opened in October 2026, each have an infinity pool and a sauna of their own. The hotel's restaurant is an outlet of La BOMBANCE, a Japanese restaurant whose main branch is in Nishi-Azabu, Tokyo. All guests share a 10 m by 4 m outdoor pool, heated from October to March. Guests must be of junior-high-school age or older (roughly 12 and up) (all as of October 2026, official site). The plan notes on its booking page say instead that children under elementary-school age can't stay, so if you're bringing a child, ask the hotel first.

  • From Naha Airport: about 100 minutes by car. A free shuttle runs once a day, leaving the airport at 1:30 pm, with 6 seats; book at least 3 days ahead (as of October 2026, official site). That's before the new United nonstop is scheduled to land.

  • Check current rates on the official site

THE SHIGIRA (Miyako Island) — provisional

The top villa hotel inside Shigira Seven Miles Resort, a large resort area on Miyako's south coast. Every room is a villa or suite, butlers look after guests, and breakfast and dinner at the resort's restaurants are included, with some drinks. It has no award and we couldn't read a price, so this tier is provisional.

Open in Google Maps

Tier 3: Upscale resorts

The Busena Terrace (Nago)

Our top family pick. It has a 760 m (half-mile) private white-sand beach that's swimmable all year, during set hours. There are two outdoor pools (open April through November, one with a waterslide) and an indoor pool with a shallow kids' pool. The Kids' Club takes children from 6 months to 15 years old, and the hotel has announced a free airport shuttle from April 2026 to March 2027. It doesn't hold an award of its own, which keeps it in this tier.

Open in Google Maps

The Terrace Club at Busena (Nago)

The full name is The Terrace Club Wellness Thalasso at Busena. It's a separate, smaller hotel from the same Terrace group, on Cape Busena by the sea, and it's built around thalassotherapy, treatments that use seawater. Its Thalasso Pool is filled with seawater drawn from the cape, and there's also an infinity pool. Every guest gets club-floor privileges, with food and drinks at teatime and before dinner. Guests must be 13 or older. It belongs to Small Luxury Hotels of the World, and Forbes Travel Guide lists it as Recommended, which places it in tier 3 under our test. Its summer price is above our tier 3 band, but it has no MICHELIN Key, Forbes Four-Star rating or luxury brand for tier 2. The hotel has announced a free airport shuttle from April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027 (all as of October 2026, official site).

Open in Google Maps

The Atta Terrace Club Towers (Onna)

Another Terrace hotel, with MICHELIN "Selected" status. It sits high in the hills of Onna next to the group's 18-hole golf course, which looks over the East China Sea, rather than on a beach. There's an infinity pool surrounded by subtropical forest, a spa that uses botanicals from the hotel's own farm, and several restaurants, including teppanyaki. Guests must be 13 or older (all as of October 2026, official site).

Open in Google Maps

Renaissance Okinawa Resort (Onna)

A beachfront family resort with eight restaurants and bars, dolphin programs and a thalassotherapy (seawater) spa.

Open in Google Maps

Hilton Okinawa Chatan Resort (Chatan)

Not on the beach itself, but Sunset Beach is about 500 m away and the American Village shopping and dining area is next door. The outdoor pool has cabanas, and the kids' pool has waterslides.

Open in Google Maps

Orion Hotel Motobu Resort & Spa (Motobu)

A resort right by the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium: the hotel gives about a 7-minute walk to the aquarium and about 2 minutes to the entrance of Emerald Beach. It has 238 rooms on 12 floors, split between the Ocean Wing and the smaller Club Wing. There's an indoor pool, an outdoor pool with a kids' pool, and an infinity pool for Club Wing guests only, plus a hot-spring bath, a spa and a kids' playroom. With no award and a summer Saturday price in the upscale band, it sits in this tier. The hotel has announced it will close for a legally required inspection from January 11 to 13, 2027 (all as of October 2026, official site).

  • From Naha Airport: about 100 minutes by car on the expressway (the hotel's estimate; the aquarium gives about 2 hours), or 2 to 3 hours by bus, depending on the service. Bus 117 has no airport departures in the late afternoon or evening, so it won't fit the afternoon flight from San Francisco; see our airport guide.

Open in Google Maps

ANA InterContinental Manza Beach Resort (Onna)

The hotel sits on the Manza peninsula, next to the cliffs of Cape Manzamo, with its own private beach. There's a guests-only garden pool and a beach pool a few steps from the sand. Kids get the indoor Manza Kids Playland, and adults get a spa, sauna and public bath.

Open in Google Maps

Sheraton Okinawa Sunmarina Resort (Onna)

A 400 m white-sand beach runs right in front of the hotel. There are indoor and outdoor pools (some seasonal), kids' pools only 30 cm (1 ft) deep, a spa, beach activities and a zip line.

Open in Google Maps

Hilton Okinawa Miyako Island Resort (Miyako Island)

Sunset Beach is less than 1 km away. There are indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, a rooftop bar and a kids' club. A free shuttle runs from Miyako Airport, about 15 minutes away (ask the hotel for the schedule).

Open in Google Maps

Hilton Okinawa Sesoko Resort (Sesoko Island)

Sesoko is a small island joined to the Motobu Peninsula by a bridge, about 90 minutes by car from the airport and close to the Churaumi Aquarium. The hotel opened in July 2020 on the white sand of Sesoko Beach; the developer, Mori Trust, describes it as the first beach resort Hilton developed in Japan. It has 298 rooms, indoor and outdoor pools with separate kids' areas, and a spa. On a winter weekday it was one of the cheapest hotels on this list, which makes it the best value among the big beach resorts.

Open in Google Maps

The Beach Resort Sesoko, a Hilton Club (Sesoko Island)

Next door is a newer building, opened in 2021, with 140 studios and one- to three-bedroom suites, all with full kitchens. It's a Hilton Grand Vacations club, mainly for members. Guests can use the beach and pools of the Hilton next door, which makes it a good choice for longer family stays. Its high July price reflects the size of the suites, not a higher class.

Open in Google Maps

ANA InterContinental Ishigaki Resort (Ishigaki Island)

A large full-service resort right on Maesato Beach, with four pools, a Club InterContinental wing, a spa and a golf course. Children 12 and under stay free when they share a bed.

Open in Google Maps

Club Med Ishigaki Kabira (Ishigaki Island)

An all-inclusive resort facing a natural beach in a national park's marine zone. Meals and most activities (kayaking, paddleboarding, archery and more) are included, and there are kids' programs by age, from babies to 17. Club Med sells per-person packages, so its prices can't be compared with the room rates above.

Open in Google Maps

Hotel Nikko Alivila (Yomitan)

Rooms look out over Nirai Beach, which the hotel calls one of the clearest beaches in Okinawa. There's an outdoor garden pool and an indoor relaxation pool with jets and a sauna. The hotel runs nature and culture programs for kids.

Open in Google Maps

Oriental Hotel Okinawa Resort & Spa (Nago)

A large family resort with 361 rooms, a big garden pool and an indoor pool. Guests use Kariyushi Beach nearby, where the hotel runs a beach desk.

Open in Google Maps

Feliz Villa Suite Kouri Island View (Nago) — provisional

A small villa resort facing Kouri Island and its long bridge. The infinity pool looks straight out at the island, and there's a jacuzzi. Because of box jellyfish, the hotel advises against swimming in the sea in front of the villa from about July to early October, and points guests to Kouri Beach, just across the bridge, instead.

Open in Google Maps

Tier 4: Good value

Courtyard by Marriott Okinawa Resort (Nago)

A new hotel from Marriott's mid-priced Courtyard brand, right on Kise Beach with direct access to the sea. It has a kids' club (paid) and an all-day restaurant.

Open in Google Maps

BEB5 Okinawa Seragaki (Onna)

BEB is the casual brand of Hoshino Resorts, the company behind HOSHINOYA. This one has 105 rooms, and every room has a kitchen and a washer-dryer, which helps on a longer family stay. The larger suites sleep up to five. There's one pool, heated and open all year, and a barrel sauna. It isn't on the beach, but Nabee Beach is within walking distance. Children under 6 can share a bed for free (all as of October 2026, official site).

Open in Google Maps

Vessel Hotel Campana Okinawa (Chatan)

The lowest prices we found. It isn't a beach resort, but it has a rooftop pool and a bath with a view, every room has a balcony, and it sits in a corner of American Village, the shopping and dining area. Some rooms face the sea and some don't, so check the room type.

What your dollar buys right now

The dollar is much stronger against the yen than it was a few years ago. On October 2, 2026, one US dollar bought 157.81 yen, compared with an average of about 109 yen in 2019 (Federal Reserve data, as of October 2026). Prices in Japan have also gone up since then, but a yen-priced room still costs a US visitor much less in dollars than it did before.

For comparison, the average hotel room in Hawaii cost $372 a night in August 2026, according to the State of Hawaii, and luxury-class hotels there averaged $740. Okinawa has no official average room rate to compare directly. Its own survey found that visitors from elsewhere in Japan spent about ¥12,500 per person per night on lodging in fiscal 2025 (about $80 at October 2026 rates), a figure that covers every kind of lodging, not just resorts.

When to go

Resort season and typhoon season overlap. Okinawa is warm all year, but late summer brings typhoons. Season changes the price more than anything else: in our searches, a peak summer Saturday cost two to three times a January weekday at most of these hotels. If warm water matters less than price, a winter weekday gets you a top-tier room for far less.

  • Rainy season: around May 10 to around June 21 in a typical year.
  • Swimming: Swim at managed beaches during their swimming season, when lifeguards keep watch and nets are set against box jellyfish. Many beaches have neither. Check the beach's official page before you go.
  • Box jellyfish: advisory June 1 – September 30 (2026); most stings in July and August; swim inside the nets and cover your legs.
  • Basketball: B.LEAGUE season runs fall to spring, with playoffs in May.
  • The nonstop: United's SFO–Naha nonstop starts March 27, 2027, three times a week. Some reports say it is seasonal; that is not confirmed yet.

Climate: Japan Meteorological Agency, Naha climate normals 1991–2020. Typhoons: JMA normals. Jellyfish: Okinawa Prefecture, box jellyfish advisory. Checked 2026-10-10.

  • 2026-10-20 — The quick box said the fewest typhoons come from November to early May. Japan Meteorological Agency normals show none from December to April, but some in November and May, so it now says December to April
