Shuri Castle 2026–27: Rebuilt Main Hall Opens Nov 23, Festival and New Year
Shuri Castle's main hall burned in 2019 and has been rebuilt. It opens to the public on November 23, 2026. What changes for visitors, how the timed reservations work, the castle festival (Oct 31–Nov 3) and what we know about New Year 2027.

Stand on Kokusai-dori, Naha's main shopping street, on the afternoon of Sunday, November 1, and the traffic is gone. In its place comes a royal procession: about 700 people in the court costume of the old Ryukyu Kingdom, with a king and queen and the envoys of a Chinese emperor among them. Three weeks later, up on the hill at Shuri Castle (首里城, Shurijo), the great red main hall that burned in 2019 opens its doors again.
This guide explains why the castle matters to Okinawa, what changes when the hall reopens on Monday, November 23, 2026, and how to fit in the festival and New Year.

Why Shuri Castle matters
Shuri Castle was the home of the Ryukyu kings, the island nation that ruled Okinawa before it became part of Japan. The park's official overview calls it the center of government and culture for the islands. The Second Sho dynasty ruled from here from 1469 until 1879, when Japan annexed the kingdom and the royal family left. You can read Okinawa's place between two powers in the layout: the main courtyard follows Chinese palace planning, while some buildings use Japanese ideas.
The castle has been lost and rebuilt again and again. Okinawa Prefecture says it burned down four times between its founding and World War II, the last time in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, when the naval bombardment left it in ruins. After the 1992 restoration, the red hall was the island's best-known landmark for almost 30 years.
Then, early on October 31, 2019, fire broke out again. The Okinawa General Bureau of Japan's Cabinet Office, which runs the rebuilding, counts nine buildings hit by the fire: seven burned completely, including the main hall, and two burned in part. Okinawa Prefecture's December 2019 statement gives a different total, eight buildings damaged with the main hall among them; neither source explains the difference. Many people in Okinawa felt it as the loss of a symbol, and donations came from Japan and abroad. Japan's national government rebuilt the main hall, and the park let visitors watch the work along the way; according to the park, construction began in November 2022.
One detail surprises many visitors. The World Heritage listing is not for the red hall. In December 2000, UNESCO listed the "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu." At Shuri Castle, the park says the listed part is the original stone foundation of the main hall, under the building you see.

As of October 2026, official site
November 23 is a national holiday and the park expects crowds. If your dates are flexible, a weekday later in the trip is likely easier.
Free area, paid area and the main hall
Shuri Castle Park has two parts. The free area covers the outer gates and walls, starting with the famous Shureimon gate, and anyone can walk in. The paid area begins at Hoshinmon gate, where you show your ticket, and holds the courtyard and the main hall.
From November 23 there are two kinds of paid-area ticket at the same price. One includes a timed slot to go inside the main hall. The other covers the rest of the paid area, including the hall's outside seen from a raised viewing deck and the reconstruction exhibits, but not the interior. Choosing a time slot costs nothing extra (as of October 2026, official site).
How the reservations work
- Book online through Webket, the ticket site linked from the park's official ticket guide. Up to 9 tickets per purchase, in 30-minute slots.
- Visits from January 1, 2027 go on sale at 13:00 Japan time on the 1st of the month, two months ahead. Visits for November 23 to December 31, 2026 went on sale on September 1 and October 1.
- Same-day tickets are sold only if slots are left: online up to 15 minutes before the slot, or at the Kofukumon ticket window.
- Changes and refunds (Webket purchases only): change the date or time until the day before; refunds until two days before.
- Children not yet in school don't need a reservation. Everyone else does, including people who get in free.
- At Hoshinmon you show a QR code. The park suggests choosing a slot about 40–50 minutes after you expect to reach Shuri Station (all as of October 2026, official site).
We couldn't see how many slots are left, because the booking site opens with a waiting queue, and we couldn't confirm which languages Webket offers. The park's ticket guide has an English version, but on October 9, 2026 the park said the automatic translation on the rest of its site is paused because of a system problem.

Shuri Castle Reconstruction Festival (Oct 31–Nov 3, 2026)
The castle festival is the park's signature fall event. In 2026 it's called the Shuri Castle Reconstruction Festival (首里城復興祭), and it lands just weeks before the main hall opens.

New Year at Shuri Castle (Jan 1–3)
The park's New Year event, Shinshun no Utage, brings back royal court customs. In 2026 it ran January 1–3, with a reenactment of the New Year court ceremony, the king and queen's appearance, court music and Ryukyuan dance.
The 2027 dates and program have not been announced (as of October 2026, official site); the event page still shows the January 2026 edition. It will be the first New Year since the main hall reopened. If you want to visit on January 1–3, 2027, remember that main hall slots for January go on sale on November 1, 2026. We'll update this page when the park announces the program.
Getting there
- Yui Rail (monorail): ride to Shuri Station, about 27 minutes from Naha Airport Station. From there, the park's access page puts Shureimon gate about 15 minutes away on foot. Its ticket guide counts it differently (below). If you have a timed slot, plan on the time to Hoshinmon.
- Bus: from the Shuri Station bus stop, Naha Bus routes 7 and 8 stop at Shurijo-mae, about 1 minute from Shureimon.
- Taxi: about 40–60 minutes from Naha Airport, or 15–25 minutes from Kokusai-dori, depending on traffic.
- Car: the park's underground garage is small, takes no reservations for cars, and fills up in the morning. It costs ¥500 for the first hour, then ¥250 per 30 minutes, up to ¥1,000, with a 3-hour limit. Japan drives on the left (all as of October 2026, official site).
Walking from Shuri Station, by the park's ticket guide:
- About 20 minutes to the Suimui-kan visitor center
- About 5 more to Shureimon gate
- About 15 more uphill to the Hoshinmon ticket gate (all as of October 2026, official site)
When to go
Late fall and winter suit a hilltop castle. Naha's average high is about 25.0°C (77°F) in November, 21.5°C (71°F) in December and 19.8°C (68°F) in January (Japan Meteorological Agency normals). Typhoons are rare by then: on average 0.3 come near Okinawa in November and almost none from December to April. Bring a light jacket for January evenings and shoes for a lot of walking on stone.
