Rainy Day in Okinawa: Indoor Things to Do by Area
Rain on your Okinawa beach day? Here are indoor plans near Naha, in the central and southern parts of the island and up north, with official hours and prices, plus what changes when a typhoon comes.
- Naha
- the prefectural museum and the public market
- South
- a cave park and a glass workshop
- Central
- a big mall, or a Kings game in season
- North
- the Churaumi Aquarium and a beer factory tour
- Typhoon
- stay in
- Best time
- rain peaks in May–June and August–September
The rain starts while you're still at breakfast, and the beach is off. By ten you're in a limestone cave 30 minutes from the airport, or blowing your own glass at a workshop in Itoman, or standing in front of the whale shark tank up north. Okinawa has a good indoor day in every part of the island.
This guide sorts the indoor options by area, so you can pick one near where you're staying. Each place has its official hours and prices, and a short note on who it suits.
- Beach trips that hit a wet day
- Families who need a plan B with kids
- Anyone traveling in May, June, August or September
- 11.2 inAverage June rain in Naha (284 mm), the wettest month

How rainy is Okinawa?
Okinawa gets rain all year, but two stretches are wetter than the rest. The first is the rainy season, which usually runs from around May 10 to around June 21. The second is late summer, when typhoons pass nearby.
- Wettest months in Naha: June (11.2 in / 284 mm), September (10.8 in / 275 mm), May (9.7 in / 245 mm) and August (9.4 in / 240 mm).
- Driest months: January (4.0 in / 102 mm), then December and February.
- Typhoons: most come near from July to September, with August the peak.
A wet month doesn't mean every day is wet. Keep one indoor plan in your pocket for each part of the trip, and swap it in when you need it. For the full year, month by month:

- Swimming: Swim at managed beaches during their swimming season, when lifeguards keep watch and nets are set against box jellyfish. Many beaches have neither. Check the beach's official page before you go.
- Box jellyfish: advisory June 1 – September 30 (2026); most stings in July and August; swim inside the nets and cover your legs.
- Basketball: B.LEAGUE season runs fall to spring, with playoffs in May.
- The nonstop: United's SFO–Naha nonstop starts March 27, 2027, three times a week. Some reports say it is seasonal; that is not confirmed yet.

Naha
Naha is the capital and where most first-time visitors sleep. Both places here are close to the Yui Rail monorail, so you don't need a car.
Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum
One building holds two places: the prefectural museum and the prefectural art museum, each with its own collection exhibition and its own ticket. It sits in the Omoromachi district, about a 10-minute walk from Omoromachi Station on the monorail.
The late hours on Friday and Saturday make it a good evening plan when dinner plans get rained out. Check the hours and fees page before you go, since the museum says hours can change.
First Makishi Public Market
Naha's public market is a covered building, so rain doesn't matter much once you're inside. It's about a 9-minute walk from Makishi Station on the monorail.
- Ground floor: about 75 stalls selling fresh fish, meat and other food.
- Second floor: restaurants serving Okinawan dishes.
- Have your fish cooked: buy fish or meat downstairs, and some items can be cooked for you upstairs for a fee. Last orders for this are at 7:45 pm (as of October 2026, Naha City official site).
The market is open 8:00 am to 10:00 pm, but each shop sets its own hours. It closes on the fourth Sunday of most months (not in December), January 1–3, and the two main days of the Old Bon holiday, whose dates follow the lunar calendar. The restaurants' last orders are at 8:00 pm. There's no parking, so come by monorail or on foot (all as of October 2026, Naha City official site).
The south
The south is a short drive from Naha Airport, which makes it a good first or last day of a trip.
Okinawa World (Gyokusendo Cave)
Okinawa World is a theme park in Nanjo City, and you enter it through Gyokusendo, a large limestone cave. The cave is underground, so it's the part of the park the rain doesn't reach. The official pages we read don't say how much of the rest of the park is covered, so plan the cave as your rainy-day part.
The official fee page doesn't list closing days, and the access page doesn't mention parking. Check both on the official site (Japanese) before you go.
Ryukyu Glass Village
Ryukyu glass is Okinawa's colorful handmade glassware. At Ryukyu Glass Village in Itoman, the shop is free to walk around, and you can make something yourself. It's open every day, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, with free parking for 100 cars (as of October 2026, official site).
There are two kinds of workshops, and the difference matters for travelers.
- Blow your own glass (reservation required). The 10-minute session starts at ¥4,400 (about $27.90) for a clear glass or small bowl, and ¥5,500 (about $34.90) for a tall glass; colors cost extra. You can't take it with you that day. The glass cools overnight, and the village ships it 2 to 7 days later.
- Same-day crafts (no reservation). Most take about 40 minutes, such as painting a glass or making a photo frame. Same-day crafts start at ¥3,300 (about $20.90), and you leave with the piece (all as of October 2026, official site).
Bookings for glassblowing open two weeks ahead, and same-day bookings close at 9:00 am. Workshop check-in ends at 4:00 pm (all as of October 2026, official site). The workshop page doesn't say whether prices include tax, or whether the village ships outside Japan. If you fly home soon, choose a same-day craft, or ask before you book on the workshop page (Japanese).
The central area
Both ideas here keep you under one roof for hours, and both can be reached by bus from Naha Airport.
AEON MALL Okinawa Rycom
Rycom is a shopping mall in Kitanakagusuku, with shops, restaurants, a food court and a supermarket under one roof. On a wet afternoon with kids, that is often all you need. The mall's English page also lists stroller and wheelchair rentals, free Wi-Fi and tax-free counters.
- Shops and food court: 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.
- Restaurants: 11:00 am to 11:00 pm.
- Supermarket: 8:00 am to 11:00 pm.
- From the airport: the mall puts it about 60 minutes by bus from Naha Airport (all as of October 2026, official site).
The mall says individual shops can keep different hours.
A Ryukyu Golden Kings game (October to May)
In season, Okinawa's pro basketball team plays home games at Okinawa Suntory Arena in Okinawa City. A game is indoors, loud and a lot of fun, even if you don't follow basketball. The season runs from fall to spring. The 2026–27 playoffs are set for May 7 to June 1, 2027 (as of October 2026, B.LEAGUE official site).
Game dates change through the season, so we don't list them here. Check goldenkings.jp for home games during your trip. Our Ryukyu Golden Kings guide covers tickets, the free game-day shuttle and the trip home after a night game.

The north
Up north, rain is a good reason to do what most visitors come for anyway.
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
The aquarium's tanks are inside the building, so this is the classic rainy-day trip in Okinawa. Until March 31, 2027, it is open 8:30 am to 6:30 pm (last entry 5:30 pm), with no closing days scheduled, including over New Year. The facilities around the aquarium, such as the Okichan Theater and the Sea Turtle Pool, close earlier at 5:30 pm. The aquarium warns it can close at short notice for typhoons (all as of October 2026, official site).
It's about two hours from Naha by car each way. Prices, the bus from the airport and what's nearby are in our Churaumi and Motobu guide.

More about this ride
About 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes by the timetable. Only some route 117 buses start at the airport, and none leave it in the late afternoon or evening, so check the operator's timetable before you plan on it. The bus continues to the Orion Hotel Motobu Resort & Spa stop.

Orion Happy Park (beer factory tour)
Orion is Okinawa's own beer, and its factory in Nago runs a one-hour tour with a tasting of two of its beers. Guests who drive and anyone under 20 can't drink alcohol, by law, and the tour offers a non-alcoholic tasting instead.
The factory says production doesn't run on weekends and public holidays, so the lines may be quiet on those days. Book on the official tour page, where you pick a date and time slot.
With kids
Most of the places above work for families. Good fits for a wet day with children:
- The aquarium, for the big tanks.
- Okinawa World, for the cave walk. Children 4–14 pay the child price.
- Rycom, with stroller rentals and a food court.
- The prefectural museum, if your kids like history.
The Orion tour admits children, but the guide speaks only Japanese and the tasting is for adults.
Typhoon days are different
A rainy day is a day for indoor plans. A typhoon day is a day to stay in. When a typhoon is near, buses and the monorail can stop, flights can change, and places like the aquarium can close at short notice.
- Stay at your hotel and follow its instructions.
- Follow the Japan Meteorological Agency for warnings, on its English site, not forecasts from other sources.
- Check your airline and anything you've booked before you go anywhere.
Our typhoon season guide covers what to check before you book a summer trip and what to do when a storm comes.
Plan a flexible day
A little room in your plan goes a long way in the wet months.
- Keep beach and coast days movable. Put them on the driest day of your trip, and keep one indoor plan for each area you'll be in.
- Book what has free cancellation. The Orion tour, for example, can be cancelled free until 4:00 pm the day before.
- Watch the last-entry times. Okinawa World stops letting people in at 4:00 pm, and the aquarium at 5:30 pm.
- Bring yen. The prefectural museum doesn't take credit cards (all as of October 2026, official sites).
