Churaumi Aquarium, Kouri Island and the Motobu Peninsula: A Northern Okinawa Day Trip
Is the Churaumi Aquarium worth the long drive from Naha? How to get there by car, bus or tour, official hours and admission, and how to fit in Bise's tree-lined lanes, Nakijin Castle Ruins and Kouri Island in one day.
- Plan on
- a full day from Naha
- Drive
- about 2 hours each way to the aquarium (official)
- Without a car
- bus 117 or an airport shuttle bus, timetables on the operators' sites
- Aquarium
- ¥2,180 adults, open every day (official)
- Best time
- leave early
You leave Naha early, and by mid-morning you're on the Motobu Peninsula in the north-west of the island. Inside Ocean Expo Park, the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium opens at 8:30 am every day. Afterward, a few short drives take you to a village lane lined with old fukugi trees, a castle ruin on a hill, and a long bridge across shallow turquoise water to Kouri Island (as of October 2026, official site).
That's the classic day trip north. This guide covers whether it's worth the drive, how to get there with or without a car, the aquarium's official hours and prices, and a plan that fits it all into one day.
- Travelers staying in Naha, Chatan or Onna who want to see the north
- Families with kids who love sea animals
- Road-trippers
- Cherry blossom season visitors in late January and early February
- about 2 hrNaha Airport to the aquarium by car, via the Okinawa Expressway
- ¥2,180Aquarium admission, adults (about $14)
- 8:30 amAquarium opening time, every day
- ¥1,000Nakijin Castle Ruins admission, adults (about $6)

Is it worth the drive?
For most first-time visitors, yes, if you give it the whole day. The aquarium alone is about two hours from Naha Airport by car, according to its own access page (as of October 2026, official site). Add the stops nearby, and you're out from morning to evening.
If you only have a day or two in Okinawa, or you're staying in Naha without a car, it's a big chunk of your trip. In that case, a first or last night up in Motobu makes it easier; see our where to stay guide.
Getting there: car, bus or tour
This is our own comparison. The times come from the official sites (as of October 2026, official site); we don't list tour prices because they vary by company.
| Car (as of October 2026, official site) | Bus | Tour | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to the aquarium | About 2 hours from Naha Airport | About 2 to 3 hours | Depends on the tour |
| Freedom | Stop anywhere | Fixed timetable; the stop is a 10-minute walk from the aquarium | Fixed plan |
| Best for | Seeing several stops in one day | The aquarium on its own | Not driving, with a guide |
By car. Take the Okinawa Expressway north. Parking at Ocean Expo Park is free; the North Gate multilevel lot (P7) is closest to the aquarium. If your navigation can't find the aquarium, the aquarium suggests searching for "Ocean Expo Park" or using Mapcode 553075797 (all as of October 2026, official site). Japan drives on the left. With a US license, you also need an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, according to Japan's National Police Agency.
By bus. The aquarium's access page lists these buses from Naha Airport:
- Route 117, an expressway bus (details below)
- Route 111, an expressway bus that ends at Nago Bus Terminal. It doesn't reach the aquarium, so you'd change buses in Nago
- Okinawa Airport Shuttle, a private bus
- Yanbaru Express Bus, a private bus
- StartDomestic Passenger Terminal stop
stop 2 (central and northern expressway buses), 1st floor; check the airport's bus stop map for its place
- Bus 117 (expressway bus)Ryukyu Bus Kotsu / Okinawa Bus / Naha Bus / Toyo Bus (joint)about 140 min¥2,880
More about this ride
About 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes by the timetable. Only some route 117 buses start at the airport, and none leave it in the late afternoon or evening, so check the operator's timetable before you plan on it. The bus continues to the Orion Hotel Motobu Resort & Spa stop.
- Get offKinen-Koen-mae (Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium)
For reference only. Travel times depend on traffic, and routes and fares change. Check the operator's official site before you go (as of October 2026, official sites).
The aquarium's page says the express bus takes about three hours, while the Route 117 timetable gives about 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes. On its rapid buses, the Okinawa Airport Shuttle's timetable gives about 1 hour 55 minutes to the aquarium (all as of October 2026, official site). Times change, so check each operator's timetable before you go, and plan your return bus as carefully as the trip up.
By tour. Day tours from Naha go to the aquarium and nearby stops. Before you book, read what's included (admission, lunch) and the cancellation terms.
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
The aquarium is inside Ocean Expo Park, on the Motobu Peninsula. Its official site lists the details below (all as of October 2026, official site).
The admission page lists one set of prices, not prices by date. Check the admission page and the notices before you go, since shows and hours can change.
Arrive at opening time if you can. That leaves the afternoon for the rest of the peninsula.
Bise Fukugi tree road
Close to the aquarium is Bise, a small village in Motobu. Its houses are surrounded by rows of fukugi trees, planted as windbreaks, and the lanes between them run for about 1 km (0.6 miles) toward Cape Bise (as of October 2026, Motobu Town Tourism Association). There's parking, and a sightseeing cart runs through the lanes; the tourism association's page doesn't list its fare or hours.
It's a short, shady walk after the aquarium. People live along these lanes, so keep your voice down and stay off private property.
Nakijin Castle Ruins
Nakijin Castle Ruins (Nakijin Gusuku) is a World Heritage site on a hill in Nakijin Village, next to Motobu. The official site lists these details (all as of October 2026, official site):
- Hours: 8:00 am to 6:00 pm from September to April, last entry 5:30 pm; 8:00 am to 7:00 pm from May to August, last entry 6:30 pm.
- Closed days: open every day of the year.
- Admission: adults ¥1,000; junior high and high school students ¥500; elementary school age and younger free.
- Parking: free, about 320 spaces. Parking Lot 1 has been closed since September 1, 2026, with no end date given; use Lots 2 to 4 (all as of October 2026, official site).
In late January and early February, cherry trees bloom along the path up through the gates. See our Okinawa cherry blossom guide for the 2027 festival dates.
Kouri Island and the bridge

Kouri Island is joined to the main island by the Kouri Bridge, which Okinawa Prefecture lists at 1,960 m (about 1.2 miles). It opened in February 2005; before that, a ferry ran to the island, according to Nakijin Village. Kouri is part of Nakijin, and it's known as an "island of the gods," where traditional rituals are still held.
On a day trip, Kouri is a good last stop: drive across the bridge, look at the water from the beach by the bridge, and head back. We'll cover the island in more detail in a separate guide.
Lunch on the peninsula
We don't list restaurants in this guide. The easy choice in the north is Okinawa soba: wheat noodles in broth, usually topped with pork, served in small local restaurants. Small places may not take cards, so carry some yen.
A sample day
This is our own suggested plan, built from the official opening hours. Driving times between the peninsula stops aren't listed here; check them on your navigation the day before.
- 6:30 amLeave Naha. The aquarium's own estimate is about 2 hours from Naha Airport by car.
- 8:30 amThe aquarium opens. Give it two to three hours.
- Late morningWalk the Bise fukugi lanes nearby.
- LunchOkinawa soba somewhere on the peninsula.
- AfternoonNakijin Castle Ruins (last entry 5:30 pm from September to April).
- Late afternoonCross the Kouri Bridge to Kouri Island.
- EveningDrive back to Naha, or stay the night in the north.
As of October 2026, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium and Nakijin Castle Ruins official sites
The drive back is long after a full day. If you can, spend one night in Motobu or Onna and drive back the next morning.
Staying overnight in Motobu
A night in the north turns a rushed day into an easy one: the aquarium at opening time, Kouri at sunset, and no long drive in the dark. See our where to stay in Okinawa guide for Motobu and the resorts on the Onna coast.
When to go
The aquarium is indoors and open all year, so it works in any weather short of a typhoon. The outdoor stops change with the season.
- Late January to early February: cherry blossoms at Nakijin Castle Ruins and on Mount Yaedake in Motobu. See our cherry blossom guide.
- Rainy season: usually from around May 10 to around June 21. The aquarium is a good rainy-day plan.
- Summer: longer aquarium hours, but heat on the outdoor walks. A box jellyfish advisory runs from June through September, so swim only inside the nets at managed beaches.
- Typhoon season: typhoons come closest most often in August and September. Check the aquarium's notices and the Japan Meteorological Agency before you drive north.
