You walk out of arrivals at Naha Airport with a suitcase and one decision already made for you: how far north you'll travel tonight. Station to station, the Yui Rail monorail runs 13 minutes to Prefectural Office Station, near one end of Naha's main street. A rental car gets you to Chatan's American Village in about 35 to 40 minutes up Route 58. The resorts of the Onna coast are about 75 minutes away on the expressway, and the Churaumi Aquarium in Motobu about two hours (all as of October 2026, official site).

Okinawa's main island is long and narrow, and where you sleep decides how much of each day you spend on the road. This guide compares the four areas most first-time visitors choose between, and matches each one to a kind of trip.

The short answer

  • No car, short trip, or you want restaurants on foot: stay in Naha.
  • The middle of the island, with shops and the sea nearby, or visiting family at a base: stay in Chatan.
  • A resort with a pool and a beach, and you'll mostly stay put: stay on the Onna coast.
  • The aquarium, small islands and the green north: stay in Motobu.
  • A week or more: split it, with nights in Naha first and a resort after.

The times above go to one landmark in each area, as each official site gives them. Your own hotel may be closer or farther, so check its access page. Times on the road depend on traffic: the Ocean Expo Park, home to the aquarium, warns that local roads get especially jammed at weekday rush hour (as of October 2026, official site).

Naha: no car needed

Naha is the capital and the only area of the four on the monorail. Yui Rail starts at Naha Airport Station, right at the airport, and runs 19 stations to Tedako-Uranishi. Kokusai-dori, Naha's main shopping and dining street, is about 1.6 km (1 mile) long, running from near Prefectural Office Station toward Makishi Station (as of October 2026, official site).

From the airport it's 13 minutes and ¥290 to Prefectural Office Station, and 16 minutes and ¥320 (about $2) to Makishi. A one-day QR ticket costs ¥1,000 (about $6.30) and runs for 24 hours from purchase, not until midnight (all as of October 2026, official site).

For reference only. Travel times depend on traffic, and routes and fares change. Check the operator's official site before you go (as of October 2026, official sites).

Asahibashi Station, shown above, is close to Naha Bus Terminal, so a hotel near Asahibashi or along the monorail also works as a base for bus day trips without a car.

Good to know about Naha: it's a city, not a resort. You trade a beach outside your room for choice: you can walk out for dinner every night and change your plans without moving a car. It also suits the first night of a trip on the new United nonstop, which is scheduled to start on March 27, 2027, three times a week (United announcement, as of October 2026).

Chatan and American Village: central and easy

Chatan is a town on the west coast, in the middle of the island. Its best-known spot, Mihama American Village, is a shopping and dining area with live music and a movie theater. By car, head north on Route 58. The area's Japanese access page gives about 35 minutes from the airport, and its English page about 40 (as of October 2026, official site).

Without a car, the bus stop is Kuwae. The village's Japanese page gives about a 3-minute walk from there, and its English page about 5 minutes at the top (3 in its bus section) (as of October 2026, official site). The buses:

  • From the airport: route 120
  • From central Naha: routes 20, 28 and 29, for about ¥700 (all as of October 2026, official site)

The site doesn't give a bus travel time, and it notes that bus routes and fares may have changed; check with the bus company.

Hotels here run from resort hotels near the beach to value hotels, such as Hilton Okinawa Chatan Resort and Vessel Hotel Campana Okinawa, both covered in our resort guide. Check current rates on the official sites: Hilton Okinawa Chatan Resort · Vessel Hotel Campana Okinawa.

Visiting someone stationed on Okinawa? Ask which base and gate they use before you book, then compare drive times on a map. Chatan sits between Naha and the resort coast, which makes it a fair middle point for many visits, but it depends on the base. We aren't affiliated with the US military, and base access rules come from the base, not from us.

Onna coast: the resort strip

Onna is a village on the west coast, north of Chatan. This is where you stay for a pool, a beach outside the room and a hotel that does most of the work. Several of the island's big beach resorts sit along its shore, including these (each links to current rates on its official site):

Getting there takes time. Halekulani Okinawa's own access page gives about 75 minutes from the airport on the Okinawa Expressway, about 90 minutes on Route 58, and about 120 minutes by airport limousine bus (all as of October 2026, official site). Times for other Onna hotels vary with where they sit along the coast; check each hotel's access page, and treat any time you can't find there as unconfirmed.

Without a car, the Okinawa Airport Shuttle bus runs from the airport up the coast. Its Onna stops include:

  • Onna-noeki Nakayukui Ichiba
  • Sun Marina Beach Mae
  • Halekulani Okinawa Mae

By its timetable, the ride to Onna-noeki takes about 75 minutes. You can pay the driver if seats are free, or reserve and pay online. Some departures are suspended from October 15, 2026 to January 31, 2027 (all as of October 2026, official site). Its fare chart is an image we couldn't check, so the fare is unconfirmed here.

Once you're in, the resort is the plan. If you won't have a car, look at the resort's restaurants before you book, since you'll be relying on them.

Motobu and the north: aquarium mornings

The Motobu Peninsula, in the north-west, is home to the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium inside Ocean Expo Park. Next to it, Sesoko Island is joined to Motobu by a bridge, with resorts such as Hilton Okinawa Sesoko Resort. Stay here if your days are about the aquarium, small islands and the forests of the north, and you'd like to be there before the day-trippers from Naha. Check current rates on the official site: Hilton Okinawa Sesoko Resort.

It's the farthest of the four. The aquarium gives about two hours by car on the expressway; Ocean Expo Park gives about 2 hours 50 minutes on local roads, and between about 2 hours 20 minutes and 3½ hours by bus. The Okinawa Airport Shuttle runs to the aquarium stop in as little as 2 hours on its rapid service. Parking at Ocean Expo Park is free (all as of October 2026, official site).

Mori Trust, which developed the Hilton on Sesoko, gives about 90 minutes from the airport to the island by car, and about 15 minutes from there to the aquarium (as of October 2026, official site). That's quicker than the aquarium's own two-hour figure; the two sites measure different trips, so plan on the longer time.

After a long flight, a two-hour drive on unfamiliar roads is a lot. One easy fix is a first night in Naha or Chatan, then the drive north the next morning.

Splitting your stay

Okinawa rewards two bases more than most beach trips do: one in the city, one on the coast. Plan the move as a travel day with a stop on the way, and check both hotels' check-out and check-in times so you aren't left waiting with your bags.

Trip length A plan that works Why
3 nights 3 nights in Naha, or 3 in Chatan Moving costs half a day. On a short trip, pick one base.
5 nights 2 in Naha, then 3 in Onna City first, without a car. Pick up a rental car on day 3.
7 nights 2 in Naha, 2 in Chatan or Onna, 3 in Motobu Each move is short, and you end up next to the aquarium.

On the way home, give yourself time. From Motobu, the official estimates are about two hours to the airport by expressway, before traffic, returning a rental car and checking in for your flight. A last night in Naha or Chatan makes the final day easier.

For a full day-by-day plan around the new flight, see our 5-day Okinawa itinerary from SFO.

Car or no car?

The answer follows from where you stay. In Naha you don't need one. In Chatan you can get by on buses. In Onna and Motobu a car gives you the island, and without one you'll mostly stay at the resort.

Hotel parking isn't always free. Halekulani Okinawa, for example, charges ¥3,000 (about $19) per car per night, with free parking for some room types (as of October 2026, official site).

When to go

Okinawa is warm all year, but the season changes what each area is good for. The rainy season usually runs from around May 10 to around June 21. Typhoons come closest most often in August and September, and a box jellyfish advisory runs from June through September, so swim inside the nets at managed beaches.

Beach resorts in Onna and Motobu are at their best from April to early May and in November, when it's warm and typhoons are rare. In spring, avoid Japan's Golden Week holidays, around April 29 to May 5 (in 2027: April 29 and May 3 to 5, per Japan's Cabinet Office), when rates peak. In winter, a city base in Naha loses less than a beach base does.

  • Typhoons: about 7.7 a year come near Okinawa, most in August and September. Flights and ferries can stop for a day or two — keep your plans flexible in late summer.
  • Rainy season: around May 10 to around June 21 in a typical year.
  • Swimming: Swim at managed beaches during their swimming season, when lifeguards keep watch and nets are set against box jellyfish. Many beaches have neither. Check the beach's official page before you go.
  • Box jellyfish: advisory June 1 – September 30 (2026); most stings in July and August; swim inside the nets and cover your legs.
  • Basketball: B.LEAGUE season runs fall to spring, with playoffs in May.
  • The nonstop: United's SFO–Naha nonstop starts March 27, 2027, three times a week. Some reports say it is seasonal; that is not confirmed yet.

Climate: Japan Meteorological Agency, Naha climate normals 1991–2020. Typhoons: JMA normals. Jellyfish: Okinawa Prefecture, box jellyfish advisory. Checked 2026-10-10.

If a typhoon heads for Okinawa, buses, ferries and flights can change at short notice, and a long drive from the north to the airport gets harder. Follow the Japan Meteorological Agency and your airline, not forecasts from other sources, and leave extra time on your last day.
