Mihama American Village, Chatan: Shops, Sunsets and How to Spend an Evening
What Mihama American Village in Chatan actually is, how to get there from Naha Airport, where to eat and shop, where to watch the sunset, and how to plan an evening there, with official hours and parking.

Late in the afternoon in Chatan, the light drops toward the East China Sea, and the boardwalk along the water is a popular place to walk. Behind it stand rows of brightly painted buildings full of shops, cafés and bars. The area is known for its street performers, and in winter the whole area is lit up for the season (as of October 2026, Chatan Town Tourism Association official site).
That's Mihama American Village: not a theme park, but a seaside shopping and dining district on the west coast, in the middle of the island. This guide covers what's there, a few places to eat, shop and look, where to watch the sunset, and how to get there and park.

What's there
The village is in Mihama, a district of Chatan Town. The tourism association counts nearly 200 stores, and calls the area a favorite spot for street performers (as of October 2026, official site). The village's own site splits it into a few areas:
- Depot Island, the cluster of buildings A to E along the water, plus Depot Island Seaside
- Distortion Seaside and the Fashion Building
- Depot Central
- Mihama 7Plex, the movie theater
It's an easy place to wander without a plan.
Where to eat, shop and look

There are far more places than we can list. These are a few in each category whose hours and location we checked on the village's shop pages and the stores' own sites. We picked them as examples of what's there, not as a ranking. Hours and open days below are all as of October 2026, official site.
Eat
- KAMEZEN — Okinawa soba, including soba topped with tender pork spareribs. Depot Island Building C, 2nd floor. 11:00 am to 10:00 pm, last order 9:30 pm, open all year.
- Taco Rice Cafe Kijimunaa — taco rice, Okinawa's own mix of taco filling over rice, including a version under a soft omelet. Depot Island Building C, 2nd floor. The restaurant's own site gives 11:00 am to 10:00 pm, last order 9:30 pm; the village's shop page gives an 11:30 am opening. Open all year.
- Blue Seal Depot Island — an Okinawan ice cream brand, also selling pancakes and drinks. Depot Island Building D, 2nd floor. 11:00 am to 11:00 pm, open all year (all as of October 2026, official site).
Shop
- Okinawaya Mihama — souvenirs, including awamori (Okinawa's distilled rice liquor), snacks and character goods. American Depot A. The village's page lists 10:30 am to 8:30 pm; posts on the company's own site show 10:00 am to 9:00 or 9:30 pm.
- OKICHU SHIMAZOURI — shima-zori, Okinawa's rubber beach sandals, in more than 100 colors, with laser engraving. Depot Island Building E, 1st floor. 10:00 am to 9:00 pm.
- Mihama Glass SORA — Okinawan glasswork, including space-themed pieces. Depot Island Building A, 1st floor. 11:00 am to 9:00 pm (all as of October 2026, official site).
Look and listen
- LIVE HOUSE MOD'S — a live music club. Depot Island Building E, 2nd floor. Hours follow its show schedule, with irregular days off.
- MAGIC OCEAN — a magic show without dialogue, so it works without Japanese. Depot Central Building, 4th floor. Usually two shows a night, at 6:00 and 9:00 pm, with doors an hour earlier. On Saturdays and Sundays from October to December, and on some holidays, there's also a 3:00 pm show. The schedule can change without notice, and no closed days are listed (all as of October 2026, official site).
Okinawaya's two official listings differ on hours, and neither clearly states its days off, so check before you make a special trip. For everything else, the village's English site has a shop search by category.
The seaside walk and the sunset
Chatan faces west, so the sun sets over the water. A good spot is the boardwalk along the sea on the Depot Island side, which runs toward the Chatan Fisherina marina. The village's own fireworks page points visitors to this same stretch for the view over the sea (as of October 2026, official site).
Arrive about an hour before sunset so you have time to park and find a spot. Sunset comes much later in summer than in winter, so check the time for your date before you go.
Saturday nights and fireworks
According to the village's official page for the 2026 Seaport Chatan Carnival, local private businesses set off fireworks every Saturday. The page doesn't give a time or say whether they continue outside the summer program, so that part is unconfirmed (as of October 2026, official site).
Our own experience: we've seen small fireworks over the water on Saturday evenings. Treat that as a nice extra, not a fixed show, and check the official site and the town's tourism accounts for cancellations before you plan around it.
In summer, the town's carnival adds a short Friday-night fireworks show; in 2026 it ran on Fridays from July 24 to September 25, at around 8:00 pm for about three minutes (as of October 2026, official site). The 2027 dates aren't out yet.

More about this ride
About 55 to 80 minutes by the timetable, depending on the time of day and the route through Naha. The walk from the stop to the shops is not confirmed here.
- Get offMihama American Village Iriguchi
For reference only. Travel times depend on traffic, and routes and fares change. Check the operator's official site before you go (as of October 2026, official sites).
From central Naha by bus: routes 20, 28 and 29 stop at Kuwae, for about ¥700 (as of October 2026, official site). The village's Japanese page gives about a 3-minute walk from Kuwae, and its English page about 5 minutes.
By car: head north on Route 58. The village's Japanese access page gives about 35 minutes from the airport, and its English page about 40 (as of October 2026, official site). Allow extra time at rush hour.
By taxi: see the taxi section of our Naha Airport to your hotel guide for the airport's own fare estimates.
An evening plan
This is our own suggestion, built around the sunset. Shift it earlier in winter and later in summer.
- Late afternoonPark at the Mihama Parking Lot, or get off the bus (Kuwae, or Mihama American Village Iriguchi on bus 120). Walk the shops while it's cooler.
- An hour before sunsetHead to the boardwalk on the Depot Island side and find a spot by the water.
- SunsetWatch the sun go down over the sea.
- After darkDinner, then ice cream, then a show or live music if you booked one.
- LateBus or taxi back, or a short walk to a Chatan hotel.
Good to know
- Summer heat. Evenings in July and August are still hot and humid. Bring water, and save the walking for after the sun drops.
- Typhoon days. Typhoons come closest most often in August and September. Outdoor events and fireworks get canceled, and buses can stop.
- The ride home. If you're not staying in Chatan, check the last bus before dinner. If you drink, don't drive at all.
- Visiting family on a base? Chatan sits between Naha and the resort coast and is a common place to meet up. We aren't affiliated with the US military, and base access rules come from the base, not from us. We'll cover base visits in a separate guide.
When to go
Any time of year works, because it's mostly shops and restaurants. What changes is the evening outdoors.
- Spring and fall: the most comfortable months for the seaside walk.
- Summer: long evenings and the carnival fireworks, but heat, and typhoon risk in August and September. The rainy season usually runs from around May 10 to around June 21.
- Winter: sunset comes early, and the area is lit up with seasonal illuminations. We haven't confirmed this winter's dates; check the tourism association's site.
