Landing in Naha in the Afternoon: Your First Evening in Okinawa off the SFO Flight

The new San Francisco nonstop is scheduled to land in Naha mid-afternoon. Here's how that first evening plays out, and whether to sleep in Naha or head straight for the resort coast.

Updated 2026-10-17 · Facts checked 2026-10-17

Night in Naha
monorail, last train from the airport about 11:30 pm
Night at a resort
75 minutes or more by road, mostly after dark
Sunset in Naha
about 6:45 pm in late March
Best time
late March to early May

Your plane from San Francisco touches down in Naha in the middle of the afternoon, one calendar day after you left. Behind you are about 13 hours in the air. Ahead of you, the sun sets at about 6:45 pm in late March (as of October 2026, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan). What you do with the hours in between decides how your first night goes.

This guide covers that first evening: when you're likely to be out of the airport, and whether to sleep in Naha or go straight to a resort. It also covers dinner, cash and the next morning.

  • Travelers on the new SFO–Naha nonstop
  • Anyone choosing where to sleep on night one
  • Families deciding between Naha and the resort coast on arrival day
  • First-time visitors who land without a car
  • 3:50 pmScheduled landing in Naha (UA833)
  • 6:45 pmSunset in Naha at the end of March 2027
  • 11:30 pmLast regular monorail from Naha Airport Station toward the city

As of October 2026; landing time from United's official flight search, other figures from NAOJ, Yui Rail and NICT/NIST

What time you actually get out

United announced the route on August 25, 2026: San Francisco to Okinawa from March 27, 2027, three times a week on a Boeing 777-200ER. United says all new routes are subject to government approval. Its announcement doesn't give flight times (as of October 2026, United newsroom).

United's own flight search now lists the schedule. UA833 leaves SFO at 10:35 am and lands in Naha at 3:50 pm the next day, after 13 hours 15 minutes in the air. We checked the departures on Saturday, March 27 and Monday, March 29, 2027 (as of October 2026, united.com flight search). Aviation Wire, a Japanese aviation news site, reported in August that the flight runs on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, so it lands on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Schedules can still change before launch, so check your booking for the time on your date.

Landing isn't the same as leaving. It's an international flight, so Naha Airport lists these steps before the arrival lobby:

  1. Quarantine. Tell staff at the counter if you have a fever or feel unwell.
  2. Immigration. Show your passport.
  3. Baggage claim. Collect your checked bags.
  4. Customs. Hand in the customs declaration form. You need one even if you have nothing to declare (all as of October 2026, official site).

Naha Airport doesn't give a typical time for these steps, and neither do Japan's immigration and customs agencies (as of October 2026, official sites). We haven't timed them either, so we can't give you a door time. The Immigration Services Agency does post monthly figures on immigration waits at several airports, Naha among them, on its wait-time page (in Japanese).

One thing can speed up the last step. Naha is one of seven airports with Japan Customs' electronic declaration gates: fill in your customs declaration on Visit Japan Web, then, with a passport that has a chip, scan the code at a kiosk while your bags come out and walk through the gate (as of October 2026, Japan Customs official site). One useful hint for planning: Okinawa Bus, which runs the airport limousine buses, tells passengers to allow at least an hour between a flight's arrival and the bus they book (as of October 2026, official timetable). If you fill in your arrival forms online before you fly, see our SFO–Naha flight guide.

Two ways to spend night one

Most visitors on this flight face one choice: a short ride into Naha, or a longer trip north to a beach resort tonight. Here's how the two evenings line up.

Night one in Naha
  1. About 3:50 pmScheduled landing.
  2. After customsWalk to Naha Airport Station and ride the Yui Rail monorail, 13 minutes to Prefectural Office Station.
  3. About 6:45 pmSunset. You're already in the city.
  4. EveningDinner within walking distance of your hotel.
  5. About 11:30 pmThe last regular train leaves the airport, if your flight runs very late.

As of October 2026; landing time from United's official flight search, the rest from Yui Rail and NAOJ

Night one at a resort on the Onna coast
  1. About 3:50 pmScheduled landing.
  2. After customsPick up a rental car by shuttle, or board a limousine bus you booked for at least an hour after landing.
  3. About 6:45 pmSunset. You're likely still on the road.
  4. After darkArrive. By car it's about 75 minutes to one Onna resort on the expressway; by limousine bus, about 2 hours.

Our own side-by-side, built from the travel times in this guide:

Night one in Naha Night one at a resort
Getting there Monorail, 13 minutes, no booking Car, 75 minutes or more; or a booked bus, about 2 hours
Driving after dark None Likely, on the left, on your first day
Dinner Walk out and choose Usually the hotel's own restaurants
Next morning Shuri Castle or the city by monorail Pool and beach from the start
Best for Short trips, no car, late or delayed flights Resort-first trips, with a car or a booked bus

Option A: a first night in Naha

Naha is the capital, and the airport's monorail heads straight into it before carrying on north to its far end at Tedako-Uranishi Station. Naha Airport Station is the first stop on Yui Rail. To Prefectural Office Station, near one end of Kokusai-dori, it's 13 minutes and ¥290 (about $1.80). To Makishi Station, near the other end, it's 16 minutes and ¥320 (all as of October 2026, official site).

Trains run often in the evening. Between 4 pm and 8 pm, the weekday timetable shows a train from the airport every 5 to 7 minutes. The weekend and holiday timetable, revised on September 6, 2026, shows one at least every 10 minutes. On both, the last regular train toward the city leaves Naha Airport at 11:30 pm. The weekday timetable also shows a midnight departure as far as Makishi, but it's marked as a temporary train, so don't count on it (all as of October 2026, official timetable). Yui Rail can change its timetables before spring 2027, so look again before you fly.

  2. MonorailYui Railabout 11 min¥290
  3. Get offAsahibashi Station

For reference only. Travel times depend on traffic, and routes and fares change. Check the operator's official site before you go (as of October 2026, official sites).

Why this is the easy choice. There's no car to collect and no booking to make, and a delayed flight costs you little. You also skip a long drive after dark on unfamiliar roads, on the left, on your first day in Japan. For hotel areas near the monorail, see Where to Stay in Okinawa.

Option B: straight to the resort

If the resort is the point of the trip, going straight there saves a move later. The trade-off is time. Halekulani Okinawa, one of the Onna coast resorts, gives these times from Naha Airport (as of October 2026, official site):

  • About 75 minutes by car on the Okinawa Expressway
  • About 90 minutes by car on Route 58, the coast road
  • About 120 minutes by airport bus

With a 3:50 pm landing (as of October 2026, united.com flight search), then customs and then the trip, most of that ride falls around or after the 6:45 pm sunset in late March (as of October 2026, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan).

By car. Rental cars aren't at the terminal; each company runs a shuttle to an office outside the airport. Nippon Rent-A-Car, for one, puts its Toyosaki office about 20 minutes away by shuttle, but warns that the ride between office and airport can sometimes take around an hour (as of October 2026, official site). Our airport guide covers the shuttle stops, the International Driving Permit and tolls.

By limousine bus. Okinawa Bus runs airport limousine buses to resort hotels, from stop 1 on the airport's 1st floor (as of October 2026, official site). Three things matter on arrival day:

  • Its line to the Chatan hotels has its last airport departure earlier in the day than the scheduled landing time, so it won't work for this flight.
  • Some lines to the Onna coast and Yomitan leave the airport in the late afternoon and early evening. Check your hotel's line on the current timetable and book a departure at least an hour after landing (all as of October 2026, official timetable).
  • Fares depend on the hotel. On the Area C line, which serves hotels on the southern Onna coast around Manza and Seragaki, an adult pays ¥1,600 to ¥1,800 (about $10 to $11) one way from Naha Airport or Naha Bus Terminal. Children from age 3 until they turn 12 (that is, through elementary school) pay half, and children under 3 ride free unless they take a seat of their own. Other lines have their own fare tables (all as of October 2026, official fare table in effect from April 1, 2026).

By route bus. Route 120 runs up the west coast without a booking, with airport departures into the evening:

stop 5, 1st floor: go out of the domestic arrivals lobby; the stop is on the curb in front of it, toward the international terminal side

    More about this ride

About 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes by the timetable. Route 120 also stops along the Onna coast at Renaissance Hotel-mae, Moon Beach-mae and Onna Village Office (Onna-son Yakuba-mae), so check the stop nearest your hotel.

  3. Get offManza Beach-mae

For reference only. Travel times depend on traffic, and routes and fares change. Check the operator's official site before you go (as of October 2026, official sites).

Motobu and the far north. We couldn't find an airport bus that reaches Motobu on an afternoon arrival, and the limousine line to Motobu is suspended (as of October 2026, Okinawa Bus official site). The Churaumi Aquarium in Motobu gives about two hours by car from Naha Airport on the Okinawa Expressway (as of October 2026, official site). A first night in Naha and a morning drive is the gentler plan.

Where to eat that evening

We don't name restaurants here; we'll cover them in their own guides. Here's where to look on night one.

In Naha: Kokusai-dori. Naha's main street runs about 1.6 km (1 mile), from near the Prefectural Office to the Asato junction, and shopping and food are its main draws (as of October 2026, Naha City Tourist Association). It's a short walk from Prefectural Office or Makishi station. On Sundays, about 1.3 km (0.8 mile) of it becomes a car-free "Transit Mile" from noon to 6 pm, so if you reach it before 6 pm on a Sunday arrival, it may still be open to walkers only. Bad weather cancels it, and the street association announces each cancellation on its website (as of October 2026, Kokusai-dori shopping street association official site).

In Naha: First Makishi Public Market. This is the city's public market, about a 9-minute walk from Makishi Station (as of October 2026, Naha City official site). The ground floor sells meat and fish, and the second floor has Okinawan restaurants.

That fourth-Sunday rule matters on day one. A Saturday departure from SFO lands on a Sunday, and the first flight, leaving March 27, 2027, is scheduled to land on Sunday, March 28 (as of October 2026, united.com flight search). That's the fourth Sunday of March, so expect the market to be closed that evening.

At a resort. Plan on the hotel's restaurants unless you have a car. Before you book, check their dinner hours on the hotel's official site; an arrival after dark leaves less time.

Cash and your phone on night one

If you want yen before you leave the airport, there are two places in the international area, 1st floor:

  • Seven Bank ATM: 7:00 am to 10:00 pm, every day.
  • Travelex currency exchange: in the arrival lobby, 7:00 am to 8:30 pm, 31 currencies (all as of October 2026, official site).

Seven Bank's ATMs show Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover and other card logos, but Seven Bank says some cards with these marks may not work (as of October 2026, official site). Bring a second card, or some yen, in case yours is declined.

For your phone, Naha Airport's official pages list one option in the international area: a GLOBAL WiFi pocket Wi-Fi rental counter in the international arrival lobby, 1st floor, open 7:30 am to 9:00 pm. The terminal's public areas also have free Wi-Fi (network name "Free_Wi-Fi_NAHA_Airport"). The airport's pages don't list a SIM card, eSIM or phone rental shop (all as of October 2026, official site). To have maps on the ride to the hotel, set up an international plan or an eSIM before you fly.

The next morning

The clock. Japan Standard Time is UTC+9 (NICT). US daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November (NIST). So from the first flight in late March until early November 2027, Naha is 16 hours ahead of San Francisco. In winter, after California sets its clocks back, the gap is 17 hours.

Daylight. On March 28, 2027, the sun rises in Naha at about 6:25 am (as of October 2026, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan).

Day 2. From a Naha base, Shuri Castle and the city are a monorail ride away. From a resort, the day can start at the pool or the beach. For day-by-day plans, see our 5-day Okinawa itinerary from SFO.

When to go

The flight starts at the end of March, early spring in Okinawa. Japan's weather agency puts Naha's average high at about 22°C (72°F) in March and 24°C (76°F) in April. A late-March sunset around 6:45 pm leaves a little daylight after an afternoon landing (as of October 2026, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan).

  • Rainy season: usually from around May 10 to around June 21.
  • Typhoons: most often in August and September, and they can delay or cancel flights. Follow United for your flight and the Japan Meteorological Agency for weather, not forecasts from other sources.
  • Box jellyfish: Okinawa Prefecture runs an advisory from June 1 to September 30. It matters more for day 2 than night one.
