3 Days in Okinawa: A Short-Trip Itinerary (With or Without a Car)
Only three days for Okinawa? Two ready-made plans, one by monorail and day tour, one by rental car, with the order of the days, the travel times between them and what to book before you go.

- No car
- sleep in Naha, monorail + one day tour north
- With a car
- pick it up on Day 2, not at the airport
- Book first
- a Shuri Castle main-hall time slot
- Best time
- November to April, outside the rainy and typhoon seasons
You step off the monorail at Shuri Station with a QR code on your phone and 40 to 50 minutes to go before your time slot, as the park suggests. The walk climbs past the visitor center and through Shureimon, the castle's red gate, then up the stone path to Hoshinmon and the rebuilt main hall, where your time slot begins. Tomorrow is for the far north.
Three days is short for Okinawa, so the order of the days does most of the work. This guide gives you two plans, one without a car and one with, and leaves the prices and opening hours of each place to our guides for those places.
- Travelers adding Okinawa to a trip around Japan
- Visitors to family on a US base with a few free days
- A long weekend on the island
- 27 minNaha Airport Station to Shuri Station by monorail
- ¥1,000Yui Rail 1-day QR ticket, 24 hours from purchase (about $6.30)
- about 2 hrNaha Airport to the Churaumi Aquarium by car, via the expressway
- 90–120 minThe park's estimate for a Shuri Castle visit
As of October 2026, Yui Rail, Shurijo Castle Park and Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium official sites
Pick your base first
For three days, sleep in Naha, the capital, for both plans. It's the only part of the island on the monorail, and both plans start and end there. Naha's main street, Kokusai-dori, runs about 1.6 km (1 mile) from the Prefectural Office end toward Makishi Station (as of October 2026, official site).
If you have a car, one night up north is the only change worth making. It turns the long northern day into an easy one. Our where to stay in Okinawa guide compares Naha, Chatan, Onna and Motobu.
The two plans side by side
| Plan A: no car | Plan B: with a car | |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Naha: Kokusai-dori and the market | Naha and Shuri Castle, by monorail |
| Day 2 | The north on a day tour (or by bus) | Pick up the car, drive north: Churaumi and Kouri Island |
| Day 3 | Shuri Castle in the morning, then the airport | The central west coast, return the car, fly out |
| Nights | Naha, Naha | Naha, then Naha or the north |
| Getting around | Monorail, a tour, taxis | Monorail on Day 1, car on Days 2–3 |
Plan A is easier and cheaper to set up. Plan B sees more, but you drive on the left in a country you don't know, so read the rental notes below first.
Plan A: no car (Naha, Shuri and a day tour)
Day 1: land and stay in Naha
- ArrivalRide the Yui Rail monorail from Naha Airport Station into town. Buy a 1-day or 2-day QR ticket if you'll ride several times.
- AfternoonCheck in near Prefectural Office (Kenchomae) or Makishi Station, the two ends of Kokusai-dori.
- EveningWalk Kokusai-dori and eat near the First Makishi Public Market, close to Makishi Station.

- MonorailYui Railabout 11 min¥290
- Get offAsahibashi Station
For reference only. Travel times depend on traffic, and routes and fares change. Check the operator's official site before you go (as of October 2026, official sites).
The QR tickets last 24 or 48 hours from purchase, not until midnight: ¥1,000 for one day and ¥1,800 for two (as of October 2026, official site). A 2-day ticket bought on arrival covers Day 2 as well. For the airport, the trains and the buses in more detail, see Naha Airport to your hotel.
Day 2: the north on a day tour
The big sights of the north, the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island, are about two hours from Naha by car each way. Without a car, a day tour from Naha is the simplest way to see them in one day. Before you book, check what's included (aquarium admission, lunch), where it picks you up and the cancellation terms. We don't list tour companies or prices here.
By bus instead. Route 117, an expressway bus, runs from Naha Airport to the aquarium. Only some buses start at the airport, and none leave it in the late afternoon or evening, so this works for a morning start.
- StartDomestic Passenger Terminal stop
stop 2 (central and northern expressway buses), 1st floor; check the airport's bus stop map for its place
- Bus 117 (expressway bus)Ryukyu Bus Kotsu / Okinawa Bus / Naha Bus / Toyo Bus (joint)about 140 min¥2,880
More about this ride
About 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes by the timetable. Only some route 117 buses start at the airport, and none leave it in the late afternoon or evening, so check the operator's timetable before you plan on it. The bus continues to the Orion Hotel Motobu Resort & Spa stop.
- Get offKinen-Koen-mae (Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium)
For reference only. Travel times depend on traffic, and routes and fares change. Check the operator's official site before you go (as of October 2026, official sites).
Either way, plan the trip back as carefully as the trip up. Our Churaumi and Motobu day trip guide has the aquarium's hours and admission, the other buses, and the stops nearby.
Day 3: Shuri Castle, then the airport
- MorningMonorail to Shuri Station, then walk up to the castle. The park recommends a slot about 40–50 minutes after you expect to reach Shuri Station (as of November 2026, official site). Your slot is the time to join the line for the main hall, not the time to pass Hoshinmon.
- Late morningVisit the castle. The park allows about 90–120 minutes, depending on crowds.
- AfternoonBack to Shuri Station. It's 27 minutes by monorail to Naha Airport Station (¥360).
As of October 2026, Yui Rail and Shurijo Castle Park official sites
The park's ticket guide counts the walk in stages: about 20 minutes from Shuri Station to the Suimui-kan visitor center, 5 more to Shureimon, about 15 more to the ticket gate, and about 15 more to the main hall's entrance (as of October 2026, official site). If your flight leaves in the morning, swap Days 1 and 3 and see Shuri on your first afternoon instead. Hours, prices and the reopening of the main hall are in our Shuri Castle guide.
A beach instead, in season. If you've already seen Shuri, Naminoue Beach is the beach you can walk to from downtown Naha. Swimming is from April to October, 9:00 to 18:00, with lifeguards on duty (as of October 2026, official site). Outside those months, there's no swimming.
Plan B: with a car (south, north and central)
Day 1: Naha and Shuri, still without the car
Do Day 1 exactly like Plan A, and add Shuri Castle in the afternoon if you land early enough. Don't pick up the car yet. In central Naha you won't need it. The castle's underground garage has only a limited number of car spaces, you can't reserve one, and on crowded days you may be sent on to a private lot nearby (as of October 2026, official site). Our Shuri Castle guide has the garage details.
Day 2: pick up the car and drive north
- Early morningPick up the rental car. Many rental offices sit outside the airport, so ask your company where to meet it.
- About 2 hours laterOkinawa Churaumi Aquarium, which opens at 8:30 am. The aquarium's own estimate is about 2 hours from Naha Airport by car via the Okinawa Expressway.
- AfternoonThe Motobu Peninsula, ending at the bridge to Kouri Island.
- EveningStay the night in Motobu or on the Onna coast, or drive back to Naha.
As of October 2026, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium official site
From November 2026 to March 2027, the aquarium is open 8:30 am to 6:30 pm (last entry 5:30 pm), with no closing days scheduled through March 31, 2027. It can still close for typhoons. Parking at Ocean Expo Park is free (all as of October 2026, official site). The order of the afternoon stops and their hours are in our Churaumi and Motobu guide.
Before you drive. A US license alone isn't enough. Japan's National Police Agency accepts only International Driving Permits issued under the Geneva Convention, and you must carry the paper original, not a digital copy. Get one in the US before you fly. For where the rental shuttles leave from at the airport, see Naha Airport to your hotel.
Day 3: the central west coast, then fly out
On the way south, the west coast has two easy stops before you hand back the car.
- Cape Manzamo, Onna. A short stop at a famous sea cliff, best if you spent the night up north. Entry, hours and the "until sunset" rule are in our Cape Manzamo guide.
- Mihama American Village, Chatan. A shopping and dining area by the sea. Its English access page puts it 40 minutes from Naha Airport by car, and its Japanese page 35 minutes (as of October 2026, official site). See our American Village guide.
- StartDomestic Passenger Terminal stop
stop 5, 1st floor: go out of the domestic arrivals lobby; the stop is on the curb in front of it, toward the international terminal side
- Bus 120Okinawa Bus / Ryukyu Bus Kotsu (joint)about 70 min¥900
More about this ride
About 55 to 80 minutes by the timetable, depending on the time of day and the route through Naha. The walk from the stop to the shops is not confirmed here.
- Get offMihama American Village Iriguchi
For reference only. Travel times depend on traffic, and routes and fares change. Check the operator's official site before you go (as of October 2026, official sites).
Then return the car with plenty of time. Your rental contract gives the return office and time; if the office is outside the airport, allow for the shuttle back to the terminal too. Leave the day's last hours for the airport, not the road.
What to book in advance
| What (Shuri row as of November 2026, official site; the rest is our advice) | When to book | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Shuri Castle main hall (inside the hall) | Visits through December 31, 2026: on sale now. Visits from January 1, 2027: sales open at 1:00 pm Japan time on the 1st of the month, two months before your visit | Webket, linked from the park's ticket guide |
| Rental car (Plan B) | As soon as your dates are set | The rental company's own site |
| A day tour north (Plan A) | Once your dates are set; read the cancellation terms | The tour company |
| A night up north (Plan B, optional) | With your other hotels | The hotel's own site |
For a trip in early April 2027, for example, the main-hall slots go on sale on February 1. If spaces remain, same-day tickets are sold online until 15 minutes before the slot, or at the Kofukumon ticket window. The time slot itself costs nothing extra (all as of November 2026, official site).
The main hall opens to the public on November 23, 2026, and the park says these rules may change with crowds. The rules after opening day may differ from the above, so check them in the park's official ticket guide before you book.
The Churaumi Aquarium's admission page links to its web ticket sales. Its prices are in our Churaumi guide.
When to go
Three days goes furthest when the weather doesn't take one of them. Japan's weather agency puts Naha's average high at about 25°C (77°F) in November, 21.5°C (71°F) in December and 19.8°C (68°F) in January.
- Rainy season: usually from around May 10 to around June 21.
- Typhoons: about 7.7 come near Okinawa in an average year, most often in August and September. A typhoon can cancel flights and close the aquarium for a day or two, which hurts a short trip most. Follow the Japan Meteorological Agency's warnings.
- Box jellyfish: Okinawa Prefecture's advisory runs from June 1 to September 30. Swim only at managed beaches, inside the nets, and check each beach's own season.

- Typhoons: about 7.7 a year come near Okinawa, most in August and September. Flights and ferries can stop for a day or two — keep your plans flexible in late summer.
- Rainy season: around May 10 to around June 21 in a typical year.
- Swimming: Swim at managed beaches during their swimming season, when lifeguards keep watch and nets are set against box jellyfish. Many beaches have neither. Check the beach's official page before you go.
- Box jellyfish: advisory June 1 – September 30 (2026); most stings June to September; swim inside the nets and cover your legs.
- Basketball: B.LEAGUE season runs fall to spring, with playoffs in May.
- The nonstop: United's SFO–Naha nonstop starts March 27, 2027, three times a week. Some reports say it is seasonal; that is not confirmed yet.
Climate: Japan Meteorological Agency, Naha climate normals 1991–2020. Typhoons: JMA normals. Jellyfish: Okinawa Prefecture, box jellyfish advisory. Checked 2026-10-10.
If it rains
Swap the days around. The aquarium is indoors, so Day 2 works in the rain, short of a typhoon. Put the outdoor parts, the walk up to Shuri and the coast, on the driest day. On the day of a typhoon warning, check the aquarium's notices and your airline before you go anywhere.
Have five days instead? See our 5-day itinerary from SFO. New to the island? Start with Okinawa 101.
