Okinawa with Kids: Where to Stay, What to Book and Easy Days Out
Traveling to Okinawa with a baby, a toddler or a school-age kid? The car seat law, child fares, a zoo where kids get in free, a resort kids' club, and the season to plan around, all checked on official sites.
- Car seat
- required by law under age 6, reserve one with your rental car
- Monorail
- under 6 free (two per adult), under 12 half fare
- Okinawa Zoo & Museum
- free for ages 15 and under
- Base
- Naha without a car, a resort with a kids' club with one
- Best time
- April to early May, before the heat, jellyfish and typhoons
Your kids wake up early on the first morning, still on California time, and that works in your favor. The Churaumi Aquarium opens at 8:30 am. On a weekend, the zoo in the middle of the island stays open until 9:00 pm, and anyone 15 or younger gets in free (as of October 2026, official sites).
Okinawa is an easy place to bring children, if you sort out a few things before you fly. This guide covers the car seat law, child fares, where to base yourself, and the days out that suit each age.

The short answer
- Renting a car? Reserve a child seat when you book. It's the law for children under 6.
- No car, small kids? Stay in Naha, on the monorail. Children under 6 ride free.
- Want a pool, a beach and a few hours off? Pick a resort with a kids' club, and check its age range first.
- Best days out: the Churaumi Aquarium in the north and the Okinawa Zoo & Museum in the middle of the island.
- Summer trip? Plan around heat, box jellyfish and typhoons (see "When to go").
Choosing a base with kids
With children, the shortest drive usually wins. After a long flight, a two-hour drive north with a tired toddler is hard. Our where to stay guide compares the four main areas and their travel times from the airport.
- Naha works without a car. The Yui Rail monorail starts at the airport.
- Chatan sits in the middle of the island, near beaches and shops.
- The Onna coast and Nago have the big resorts with pools and kids' clubs.
- Motobu puts you next to the aquarium, but it's the farthest from the airport.
- StartNaha Airport Station
- MonorailYui Railabout 11 min¥290
- Get offAsahibashi Station
For reference only. Travel times depend on traffic, and routes and fares change. Check the operator's official site before you go (as of October 2026, official sites).
On the monorail, children under 12 pay half fare on one-way QR tickets. Up to two children under 6 ride free with one adult. The 1-day QR pass is ¥500 for a child (¥1,000 for an adult), and the 2-day pass ¥900 (¥1,800 for an adult) (all as of October 2026, Yui Rail official site).
A resort with a kids' club: The Busena Terrace
We checked one family resort's facilities on its own site: The Busena Terrace in Nago, just north of the Onna coast. Our beach resorts guide covers more hotels, with their kids' facilities as each hotel describes them.
Check current rates on the hotel's official booking page: The Busena Terrace. Ask the hotel about anything else you need, such as a crib for an older baby.
Car seats and rental cars
Japanese law doesn't let you drive with a child under 6 who isn't in a child seat. There are narrow exceptions, such as a medical reason. The National Police Agency also asks parents to keep using a child seat after age 6 if a child is too small to wear the seat belt properly (as of October 2026, National Police Agency).
Rental companies rent seats, and you reserve one when you book. Toyota Rent a Car, as one example, asks you to tell it about children under 6 when you reserve:
- Infant seat: under 18 months and under 13 kg (29 lb).
- Child seat: over 15 months and under 18 kg (40 lb).
- Booster (junior) seat: roughly ages 3 to 12, 15 to 36 kg (33 to 79 lb).
- Fees: ¥1,650 (about $10) per rental for an infant or child seat, and ¥1,100 (about $7) for a booster, tax included (all as of October 2026, Toyota official site).
Other companies' seats and prices differ. For left-side driving, the International Driving Permit and tolls, see our driving guide for Americans.
Kids by age: what fits
This table uses only the age limits that each official site gives. It isn't a ranking.
| Babies (under 2) | Toddlers and preschoolers (2–5) | School-age kids (6–12) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| In a car | Child seat required (infant seat) | Child seat required | Booster until the seat belt fits |
| Yui Rail monorail | Free, up to two per adult | Free, up to two per adult | Half fare (under 12) |
| Churaumi Aquarium | Free | Free | Child ticket (from elementary school) |
| Okinawa Zoo & Museum | Free | Free | Free (15 and under) |
| Busena Terrace Kids' Club | From 6 months | Yes | Yes (to 15) |
| Busena Terrace room rate | No extra charge | No extra charge (to age 5) | Counts toward occupancy |
All as of October 2026, official sites (National Police Agency, Toyota, Yui Rail, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, Okinawa Zoo & Museum, The Busena Terrace).
Babies. Book the infant seat and any hotel bassinet early, since supplies are limited. Indoor places with air conditioning are the easy choice in hot months. The zoo lists baby care rooms for changing and nursing.
Toddlers and preschoolers. This age rides the monorail free and gets into the zoo free. Plan one big outing a day, with a nap in the car or at the hotel.
School-age kids. They're ready for a full aquarium morning and a kids' club program. Keep a booster in the car until the seat belt fits.
Aquariums, zoos and parks
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
The aquarium sits inside Ocean Expo Park on the Motobu Peninsula, in the north. It's open 8:30 am to 6:30 pm, with last entry at 5:30 pm. In the same park, the play equipment is open 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, with last entry at 5:00 pm (all as of October 2026, official sites).
The aquarium has no planned closing days through March 31, 2027, apart from typhoons and other emergencies. In late April to early May and in summer, it stays open later; check the official hours page for your dates. For the drive north, see our Churaumi and Motobu guide.

More about this ride
About 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes by the timetable. Only some route 117 buses start at the airport, and none leave it in the late afternoon or evening, so check the operator's timetable before you plan on it. The bus continues to the Orion Hotel Motobu Resort & Spa stop.
- Get offKinen-Koen-mae (Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium)
For reference only. Travel times depend on traffic, and routes and fares change. Check the operator's official site before you go (as of October 2026, official sites).
Okinawa Zoo & Museum
The Okinawa Zoo & Museum (Okinawa Kodomo no Kuni in Japanese) is a zoo that also has a museum, the Wonder Museum. It's about 50 minutes from Naha Airport by car on local roads (as of October 2026, official site).
Parking fee: unconfirmed — ask the zoo. Its pages don't list one.
Hours can change on special event days. Check the official English page before you go. We haven't added the bus trip to our route guide yet, so check the zoo's access details if you're coming without a car.
Beaches with nets and lifeguards
With kids, swim only at a managed beach, during its season, inside the marked area. Our beach comparison lists four of them, with seasons, lifeguards, jellyfish nets and showers. Keep your eyes on your children the whole time.
Rainy days
Rain is common in May, June, August and September. Our rainy day guide lists indoor plans by area, including a mall with stroller rentals and a cave park.
Food kids will eat
We haven't checked restaurant hours for this guide, so we don't list restaurants here. Two easy fallbacks:
- Convenience stores sell rice balls, sandwiches and drinks. Our konbini guide explains what's on the shelves.
- Mall food courts, like the one in our rainy day guide, give everyone a choice under one roof.
Small places may not take cards, so carry some yen.
Health and safety
We keep this short. Follow the official advice linked here, and see a doctor when in doubt.
Heat. Japan's health ministry says children need watching in the heat, because their bodies don't regulate temperature as well as adults' do. If someone can't drink on their own or isn't responding normally, it says to call an ambulance right away (MHLW leaflet, PDF). In the warm months, the Ministry of the Environment posts heat stroke alerts on its English site.
Box jellyfish. Okinawa Prefecture's box jellyfish advisory runs June 1 to September 30 (2026 dates). Swim inside the nets at managed beaches.
At sea. For currents and emergencies on the water, see "Swim safely" in our beach comparison.
A sample family day
This is our own suggested plan, built around the aquarium's and park's official hours. It assumes a car and a child who still naps.
- Early morningLeave your hotel with the child seat already fitted. Jet lag helps with the early start.
- 8:30 amThe aquarium opens. Give it two to three hours, at your kids' pace.
- Late morningLunch, then the park's play equipment (open until 5:30 pm, last entry 5:00 pm).
- Early afternoonNap time in the car on the drive back, or back at a hotel nearby.
- Late afternoonPool time at the hotel.
- EveningAn early dinner close to where you're staying.
As of October 2026, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium and Ocean Expo Park official sites
On a weekend, the Okinawa Zoo & Museum makes an easier day closer to Naha, since it stays open until 9:00 pm. Remember that it's closed on Tuesdays (as of October 2026, official site).

- Typhoons: about 7.7 a year come near Okinawa, most in August and September. Flights and ferries can stop for a day or two — keep your plans flexible in late summer.
- Rainy season: around May 10 to around June 21 in a typical year.
- Swimming: Swim at managed beaches during their swimming season, when lifeguards keep watch and nets are set against box jellyfish. Many beaches have neither. Check the beach's official page before you go.
- Box jellyfish: advisory June 1 – September 30 (2026); most stings June to September; swim inside the nets and cover your legs.
- Basketball: B.LEAGUE season runs fall to spring, with playoffs in May.
- The nonstop: United's SFO–Naha nonstop starts March 27, 2027, three times a week. Some reports say it is seasonal; that is not confirmed yet.
Climate: Japan Meteorological Agency, Naha climate normals 1991–2020. Typhoons: JMA normals. Jellyfish: Okinawa Prefecture, box jellyfish advisory. Checked 2026-10-10.
April to early May is the easiest time with kids. It's warm, the rainy season hasn't started, and typhoons rarely come near (0.0 approaches on average in April, Japan Meteorological Agency normals). United's nonstop from San Francisco is scheduled to start on March 27, 2027.
Summer is the hardest season, and it's when many US families travel. Plan around three things:
- Heat: Naha's average high is 31.9°C (89°F) in July and 31.8°C (89°F) in August.
- Jellyfish: the advisory runs June 1 to September 30. Swim inside the nets.
- Typhoons: they come near most often in August (2.2 approaches on average) and September (1.9).
The rainy season usually runs from around May 10 to around June 21 (all Japan Meteorological Agency normals, 1991–2020, and Okinawa Prefecture). If a typhoon comes, stay at your hotel, follow the Japan Meteorological Agency, and see our typhoon season guide.
Dollar figures on this page use ¥157.81 per $1 (as of October 2, 2026, Federal Reserve). Treat them as rough.
